Rumor has it out in Potter-land the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film installment will feature a sexy nude sex scene featuring Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione (Emma Watson). Now, slap me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember anything at all like that from the Harry Potter books?

Well, supposedly direct David Yates felt the sexiness of Harry Potter needed to be ramped up. So he’s reportedly nixed some of J.K. Rowling‘s original story and dropped in some kind of sexy dream sequence starring Daniel Radcliffe in the buff getting naughty with Emma Watson as some kind of torturous vision to plague Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). Why? Probably because somebody out there thought Harry Potter needed to be more like Twilight, I guess.

The problem is:  Harry Potter is not Twilight. The storyline of Harry Potter isn’t about the prolonged, painful sexual tension between a hot vampire guy and his geeky human girl with the main audience being a slew of hormone-ridden teenagers. Harry Potter is meant to be a story for all ages, from the little 8-year-old daughter of a friend of mine to her 35-year-old Potter fanatic mother.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows doesn’t NEED a sex scene and frankly, it’s insulting to add a whole context to the film not intended or included by the original author. The most sexually thrilling thing in the original Harry Potter books is a bit of kissing. That’s a long, long way from a semi-nude sexual encounter dream sequence.

Since little information is really out there at this point about the Harry Potter ‘sex’ scene, maybe I’m reacting a bit too harshly. It could end up being far less titillating than is being implied in the press. In this case, however, it’s hard to reserve judgment. It’s not that I don’t enjoy Twilight and all its sexiness, but I also enjoy Harry Potter for what it is – a movie even an eight-year-old can watch and enjoy without her mom having to hold her hands over her eyes during the “naughty” bits.

* Update: A reader notes there is a scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Ron has a vision of Hermione and Harry kissing ’nude and intertwined.’ While I could not locate the exact scene mentioned by the reader in the book, I still don’t remember J. K. Rowling actually saying anything about the two having sex in the vision. So I stick to my original interpretation that a “sex scene” was not in the original book – and that showing them in a simulated sex act is not in the spirit of having an all ages audience for the film.

The first Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer is out and it’s looking fabulous! Yes, Harry Potter fans can rejoice. The very first look at the new Deathly Hallows film looks pretty damn good, even if it is woefully short. Hopefully this first look will be one of only many more to continue!

Warner Bros. released the first Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer on Monday, as part of a short behind-the-scenes featurette on the film. Sadly, the new Harry Potter movie doesn’t actually hit theaters until November, 2010. The second half of the Deathly Hallows screen translation will follow in 2011.
