Avatar Box Office Number One for Fifth Week
James Cameron‘s sci-fi epic adventure Avatar topped the weekend box office yet again for the fifth straight week. Avatar is the first film in a decade to claim that record. The film earned over $54 million over the weekend, bringing Avatar‘s worldwide earnings to $1.64 billion so far.

Avatar may have reached number one at the weekend box office yet again, but the sci-fi epic still has a way to go before breaking the all-time earnings record. That honor is still held by James Cameron’s other epic film, Titanic, which earned 1.84 billion worldwide. Only time will tell if Avatar can manage to knock Titanic out of the record books.
Avatar could definately be on the way to repeating Titanic Academy Award glory, however. Avatar took home Best Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes and earned director James Cameron the Best Director award.
Warner Bros’ The Book of Eli opened second this weekend at the box office and even managed to give Avatar a run for its money briefly, before finally succumbing to the residents of Pandora. Still, The Book of Eli earned a respectable $38 million at the box office. Peter Jackson‘s The Lovely Bones did not do so well, coming in third with only $20.5 million in the film’s first weekend in wide release.
In a frightening statistic, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, managed to stay in the top five at the weekend box office, pulling in $11.5 million at number four. The thought of anyone actually willingly sitting through such a movie – kids or no kids – just makes us shudder uncontrollably.
