Oliver Queen‘s son William is kidnapped by Damien Darhk on tonight’s episode of Arrow season 4. For a refresher on what happened last week, read my recap of episode 14.
This week’s episode of Arrow season 4 opens with Felicity doing physical therapy with Oliver and Paul. Paul reminds her that healing takes time and she needs to be patient with herself.
When Oliver and Felicity are in the parking lot afterwards, Darhk finds them. He tells Oliver that he’s kidnapped William and demands that Oliver drop out of the mayoral race. After Darhk walks away, Felicity asks Oliver, “Who’s William?” Oliver tells her that he’s his son.
Back at Arrow headquarters, Felicity tells Oliver, “Just to be clear, I don’t care that you have a child. I can’t believe that you have a child that you didn’t tell me about. What does it say about our relationship if your first instinct is to always hide the truth?”
When the rest of Team Arrow arrives, Felicity tells them that Darhk is holding Oliver’s 10-year-old son hostage. She tells them that apparently only Darhk knew about this son. Thea Queen tells her that she also knew. Felicity says she’ll call Central City PD and asks Oliver if it’s okay if she tells Barry Allen about William– only to find out Barry already knows. Oliver tells her that Malcolm Merlyn knows as well.
Team Arrow wonders who they can get to help them who can fight Darhk’s magic. John Diggle suggests John Constantine, but Oliver informs them that he’s literally in hell right now. Instead, he suggests his friend Mari McCabe a.k.a. Vixen.
In Detroit, Mari fights some mobsters. Oliver helps her take one of them out, then tells her that he needs her help.
Back in Star City, Oliver takes Mari down to Arrow HQ and introduces her to Diggle, Thea, Felicity and Samantha Clayton. He tells Samantha, “Mari and I had an animated encounter last year.” Mari tells Samantha that she can use magic to find William. She asks Samantha for an object that belonged to William. Samantha gives her William’s The Flash action figure and tells her it’s William’s favorite. Mari sniffs it, after telling Oliver, “Don’t you dare tell Barry about this.”
Laurel Lance meets up with Quentin Lance. She tells him about William. Quentin isn’t shocked and says that he isn’t surprised there’s not an army of little Oliver Queens running around.
Team Arrow, along with Mari, track down Darhk and William. But, they get away and Darhk uses his magic to protect them so that Vixen can no longer track him or William.
Back at headquarters, Oliver gets a home from Darhk. Darhk tells him to drop out of the race immediately and endorse Ruve Adams. Oliver tells Thea to let Alex Davis know.
It occurs to Mari that she gets her magic from a totem. She wonders if Darhk could be in the same situation. Quentin tells her about an idol he saw and Mari asks him to draw it for her.
Oliver holds a press conference. He says that he entered the race because no one else was stepping up, but now someone has, so he’s dropping out and throwing his support behind Ruve.
Alex tells Oliver that he was leading the race. Oliver says he’s sorry. Alex tells him, “Look, man, I don’t want ‘sorry.’ I just want an explanation.” Oliver tells him, “That’s why I’m sorry.”
Mari tells Oliver that after they get William back, Oliver should consider that maybe letting him go isn’t such a bad thing. She tells him that she grew up in a foster home and never knew her real parents. She says when she was a kid, she wasn’t ready for the answers. She tells him, “Keep him far away from your world for as long as possible.”
Darhk calls Oliver and tells him a meeting place where he’ll bring William. Thea points out that while he’s out of the house, they would have a chance to destroy the idol he gets his power from. Oliver tells Samantha that since William is her son, it’s her call. William tells him that he’s her son too. He needs to get him back and take Darhk out.
Team Arrow circles Darhk’s house. Mari crashes through his ceiling. Darhk tells her, “When you’re dead, I’ll make sure that totem gets put to better use.” She tells him, “Took the words right out of my mouth.” She steals his idol.
Darhk uses his magic to choke Oliver, Thea and Laurel. But, he suddenly finds that his powers are gone after Mari takes out the idol.
William returns to Samantha. She gives him his The Flash action figure back. He tells her, “I’m kind of over The Flash. I want a Green Arrow action figure.” She tells him, “Well, the Green Arrow is pretty amazing.”
Mari talks to Oliver again about growing up without knowing her biological parents. She tells him, “For all the frustrations I have about my real parents giving me up, I am so grateful I was raised in a situation where that was my biggest issue in life. The best thing my parents ever gave me was that freedom. Well, that and this totem that makes me a total badass.”
Oliver records a video for William, telling him that he’s his biological father, but that for his own safety he advised his mother to move them far away and not tell him where they’re going. Furthermore, he asked that she not show him this video until he’s eighteen.
Felicity returns her engagement ring and tells Oliver, “I can’t do this.” She points out that he kept her out of the loop when deciding how to proceed with William. She tells him, “Marriage is about inclusion. It’s about leaning on your partner when things get complicated. I don’t think you know how to do that.” She suddenly discovers that she can walk again. She stands up and walks out of the room.
