Avatar Smashes $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office
James Cameron‘s epic sci-fi film Avatar has surpassed $ billion in earnings worldwide, making it the 4th highest grossing film of all time at the box office. Avatar has earned over $1.02 billion at the box office so far worldwide, earning $202 million during the New Year’s holiday weekend alone, according to 20th Century Fox. Avatar also topped the US box office for the third weekend in a row, pulling in $68.3 million domestically.

James Cameron’s last epic film, Titanic, ruled the box office at number one for 16 straight weeks. Only time will tell if Avatar has the same kind of staying power. In the U.S., Avatar is now the third fastest film to hit the $300 million mark, coming in behind The Dark Night and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Coming in second at the weekend box office was Robert Downey Jr‘s Sherlock Holmes, earning $140.7 million overall so far. In third was the animated Alvin and the Chipmunks with the Meryl Streep comedy It’s Complicated coming in fourth. Sandra Bullock‘s The Blind Side held on doggedly to the top five, coming in fifth with $12.7 million for the weekend.
Love it or hate it, Avatar has certainly proven its worth at the box office, more than making up for the huge amount spent making and promoting the film. The sequel smell just continues to get stronger…
