‘Harry Potter’ Sex Scene – Going Too Far?
Rumor has it out in Potter-land the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film installment will feature a sexy nude sex scene featuring Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermione (Emma Watson). Now, slap me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember anything at all like that from the Harry Potter books?

Daniel Radcliffe Nude in 'Equus'
Well, supposedly direct David Yates felt the sexiness of Harry Potter needed to be ramped up. So he’s reportedly nixed some of J.K. Rowling’s original story and dropped in some kind of sexy dream sequence starring Daniel Radcliffe in the buff getting naughty with Emma Watson as some kind of torturous vision to plague Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). Why? Probably because somebody out there thought Harry Potter needed to be more like Twilight, I guess.
The problem is: Harry Potter is not Twilight. The storyline of Harry Potter isn’t about the prolonged, painful sexual tension between a hot vampire guy and his geeky human girl with the main audience being a slew of hormone-ridden teenagers. Harry Potter is meant to be a story for all ages, from the little 8-year-old daughter of a friend of mine to her 35-year-old Potter fanatic mother.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows doesn’t NEED a sex scene and frankly, it’s insulting to add a whole context to the film not intended or included by the original author. The most sexually thrilling thing in the original Harry Potter books is a bit of kissing. That’s a long, long way from a semi-nude sexual encounter dream sequence.
Since little information is really out there at this point about the Harry Potter ’sex’ scene, maybe I’m reacting a bit too harshly. It could end up being far less titillating than is being implied in the press. In this case, however, it’s hard to reserve judgment. It’s not that I don’t enjoy Twilight and all its sexiness, but I also enjoy Harry Potter for what it is – a movie even an eight-year-old can watch and enjoy without her mom having to hold her hands over her eyes during the “naughty” bits.
* Update: A reader notes there is a scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Ron has a vision of Hermione and Harry kissing ’nude and intertwined.’ While I could not locate the exact scene mentioned by the reader in the book, I still don’t remember J. K. Rowling actually saying anything about the two having sex in the vision. So I stick to my original interpretation that a “sex scene” was not in the original book – and that showing them in a simulated sex act is not in the spirit of having an all ages audience for the film.

i wonder what would be the future carreer of Daniel Radcliffe:*,
Ok…I can understand why this one was done. Firstly, it is NOT to compete with Twilight…which is ghetto itself, but it’s to create more effect. This part is during the part when the locket horcrux opens up, and Ron is intimidated by an APPARITION of Harry and Hermione in a tornado of love, lust, and evil. The sex was not origionally in the book, but the presence in the move proves to be more effective in drawing anger, intimidation, and fear from Ron, sort of as a mechanism to torchure him, like how in the Chamber of Secrets, the diary horcrux torchured Harry by nearly sucking the life out of Ginny and regaining some power to Voldemort. Is it a risky choice? Yes…as you can see, most classification of potter films are as a children and family film. This will obviously boost the rating to at least a PG-13…not necessarily R as that just because it was filmed as a “sex scene” doesn’t exactly mean that it will be revealing. Sex scenes just don’t randomly show up in a series that is advertised as the child’s movie, so my guess is that it will contain nudity, although not too revealing, and it will only imply sexuality. In the other parts of the book where Harry turns out nude, they will probably film them similar to the bathroom scene in the Goblet of Fire with Myrtle. These scenes will probably include when the seven Potters are changing into Harry’s clothes, when Harry dives into the lake to get to the sword of Griffindor, and when Harry awakens at Kings Cross after Voldemort casts the killing curse on him. We must also remember, the book was a sudden change to the normal feel of the rest of the books, so the movie probably will also. Don’t be discouraged, fellow fans…it’s still Harry Potter, not Potter Gone Wild. There will also be a darker feel, and much much more violence than the previous installments. All together, you shouldn’t let somthing like embarassment or fear of seeing the stars nude stop you from watching the finale; just go see it, and cover or close your eyes if somthing does happen and you don’t feel comfortable. In all honesty, however, I personally don’t think it will be too revealing.
Daniel Radcliffe is a good actor and good looking too.*.*
Such a load of rubish! I really want to go see that film, and if it has a sex scene…. Well I dont know if I ‘ll bother! Why do directors have to ruin every great book? I t’s just soooooooo annoying!
I think this sort of gossip about Harry Potter is frankly hilarious, not because it isn’t true, but because there’s always this idea that the movie producers are creating things for the sake of competing with other movie franchises; do most of you people realize that these things were books first? The plots are already there. I can remember back in 2002, people (who of course obviously hadn’t read the books and think the Potter movies were just created out of thin air) suggested, after only seeing the TRAILERS for Chamber of Secrets, that Harry Potter was trying to rip off Lord of the Rings because Harry was seen with a sword. A sword…apparently you can’t even use a medieval weapon in more than one film without it being seen as ripping the other film off. People ignored the fact that Harry uses the sword IN THE BOOK, and therefore uses it in the movie. As for the whole Horcrux love scene, I for one applaud it. Yes, J.K. Rowling started the Harry Potter novels for younger children, but if you’ve read them, you’ll see that she did a very clever thing; she increased page-count, vocabulary, and the depth of plot and character with each new book that came out, so that as Harry’s readers aged, the books aged with them. Therefore, by Book 7, she really wasn’t writing for a children’s audience anymore (even Stephen King had noticed that in his reviews of her final books). Even if you take out the scene between Harry and Hermione (and even though it isn’t stated specifically in the book that they are nude, what would be most damaging to Ron’s psyche?…the idea that they are lovers, in a very adult sense). Anyway, even if you took that scene out of the plotline (and this might contain SPOILERS for those who haven’t read the book), Book 7 contains multiple deaths (both good and bad guys), scenes of torture (both physical and mental), deaths of children, etc. I mean, the first book alone begins with a boy being orphaned when both his parents are violently murdered, later books have featured ritual sacrifice and the death of a teenager, and so on. I myself have debated how I would ever read Harry Potter, as a series, to my kids someday, and I feel like I would have to space them out over a period of time, which might be difficult considering that unlike 1999, when some kids started reading the books, they weren’t all out and available at once. I think an 8-11 year old would understand and like the first book (and movie) very well, but by Book 4 I think a child would have to at least be in their teens to really understand it, especially considering that it’s following the point of view of a teenager by that point…Harry is not eternally 11 years old, far from it. Also, a comparison to Twilight is really pretty dumb…Twilight’s “sexiness” (if it can even be called that) is really pretty chaste…the movies prove this, with a PG-13 rating (which is the same rating the 4th and 5th Potter films received, so that already shows that in terms of maturity and audience, they’re on the same level).
I think the scene could be done very well without nudity. The nudity is gratuitous and unnecessary. Do the producers really want to make the penultimate Harry Potter film “R” rated? Now, I have seen photos of a nude Radcliffe from Equus and recently saw shots of Watson in skimpy bikini . These teenagers are still kids. They have the yet-to-be-fully developed bodies of kids. Seeing them nude is, frankly, creepy and uncomfortable. Harry and Hermione hugging and kissing is all that’s needed to evoke Rowling’s storyline of the Horcrux manifesting an image to inflame Ron’s jealousy. Unfortunately, we live in an age where everything must be cheapened and shock value is the most important factor in art. I guess in the last movie, the entire Harry Potter cast can appear nude like the famous scene from the musical Hair.
Don’t worry he won’t be naked in the last movie. That is only a rumor started by someone with too much time on their hands.
Kim – Here is a quote from the director, David Yates, pretty much saying, yes – Harry will be nude in the scene with Hermione: “We’ll create something that feels very sexy and very intriguing to bring about a reaction in Rupert,” Yates told the Telegraph of the scene. The imaginary love scene isn’t the only time Radcliffe will have to take his clothes off. Yates adds, “There is another scene in King’s Cross station, where Harry almost dies and sees Dumbledore. In that scene, he will also be naked.”
So if he will “also be naked” in the King’s Cross scene, that pretty much means he’s going to be naked in the vision scene yes?
Expect for the fact where this was a rumour that’s already been busted by Gossip Cop..
Radcliffe may be shirtless, but that’s all there is to it. The WB was quoted saying it will be “nothing beyond PG fare.”
It happens either in “The Silver Doe” chapter or the one immediately after, when Ron saves Harry from the lake and they finally open the Horcrux, before he destroys it. It reads as follows:
‘your mother confessed,’sneered Riddle-Harry, while Riddle- Hermione jeered,’that she would have preferred me as a son, would be glad to exchange…’
‘Who wouldn’t prefer him, what woman would take you? You are nothing, nothing to him,’ crooned Riddle-Hermione, and she stretched like a snake and entwined herself aroung Riddle-Harry, wrapping him in close embrace: their lips met.
Nowhere does that say that they are nude/naked
” Harry, will be nude in it, and embracing and caressing Hermione.” – How exactly is that not a “sex” scene? Um. Sorry, but if they weren’t nude, it would just be making out. But to a parent? I’m thinking being nude and making out pretty much equates ’sex scene’ when you’re thinking about what kind of movie your child is watching.
It’s worth noting that director David Yates doesn’t say it’s a sex scene, either. All he says is that Dan Radcliffe, and, one presumes, Harry, will be nude in it, and embracing and caressing Hermione. Exactly the scene that nearly undoes Ron’s courage, exactly the scene that lays bare his fears, to Harry and to us, and so impresses us when he overcomes those fears.
Anyone thinking this will lead to an R-Rated, “American Pie”-ish level of nudity or exposure has no clue what these movies are about, or who they’re made for.
In any case, until you see a scene, critiquing it is asinine.
Actually, there is images are not described as naked. Entertwined: yes. Naked: no.
And the description saying that “first chests, then waists, then legs” coming out of the locket doesn’t neccessarily mean naked.
That scene is about Ron, and Ron’s feelings, and not at all about some naked or non-naked images.
It would be nice if they focused on Ron for a change.
While I hear where the comments are coming from on this subject, I have to say that I personally disagree with raising the “maturity” level of the film by featuring a so-called sex scene, implied in the book or not. I’ve always loved that Harry Potter is so accessible to a variety of ages and believe ’sexing’ the film up is cheap.
It seems like the only people that are complaining are those who didn’t read the book, Harry and Hermione kiss. It’s Ron’s greatest fear that old Voldy acts on. It’s olay to make it sexy, it was sexy in the book. Get over it.
Hear Hear!
There IS a scene in Deathly Hallows where a nude Harry and Hermoine are entertwined, and it is a scene to torture Ron. There is some kissing, and many awful comments to Ron.
Ron is attempting to destroy a Horcrux to further diminish Voldy’s link to immortality. But, the twisted thing (the locket) has something of a mind of it’s own, ala the diary from book 2. The diary shows Ron these visions, to tempt him to turn on his friends; it shows his deepest fear, the girl he loves throwing him over (cruelly at that) for his best friend. They are not putting the Twilight spin on Harry Potter, it was already there. In the book, the focus of the scene is on Ron’s anguish, seeing his fears made manifest while Harry is there to witness it. There was no lasciviousness in the scene, the fact the ‘ghosts’ the Horcrux called up were nude was inconsequential to the scene in the book
