My interview with McKenzie Westmore, host of Face Off on SyFy, started off with a little bit of bad news. Mckenzie has been going through physical therapy for three herniated disc, but she says that her recovery is coming along very well. After wishing her a speedy recovery, we went on to a better conversation topic, Face Off season 9! Keep reading to find out what McKenkie had to say about the upcoming season and her favorite moments from working on Face Off!I started the interview with McKenzie by asking her if she could fill us in on any guest judges coming up on Face Off season 9. McKenzie said that there will be some Star Trek influences joining this season of Face Off 2015. Jonathan Frakes and Michael Dorn will be making appearances on this season of Face Off on SyFy. For anyone who doesn’t know who they are, Jonathan Frakes played Commander William T. Riker and Michael Dorn is best known for his role as Klingon Worf! So excited to see them both!
Speaking of Star Trek, I also asked McKenzie how she enjoyed working with her father, Michael Westmore, on Face Off and she had nothing but good things to say. “My dad is so incredibly chill,” she added that she has only seen him get rattled a couple of times. She said that the only thing that they joke about is that he gets so excited about the makeups and he has so much advice going through his head, that he sometimes talks over her. He will immediately tell her, “I’m sorry, I did it again.” She said that she is so lucky to work with not just her father, but the man that he is.
Talking about her father, she told me a story about this past Father’s Day where she wrote him a three-page letter in his card to thank him for everything he did for their family and for them as kids. She admitted that when she was younger, she didn’t always understand why he wasn’t there, but as she got older she started to realize that he was doing all that work for their family and to allow them to have the life that they did.
The next question went back to Face Off favorites, I asked McKenzie what her favorite challenge has been thus far and she told me that it was the Tim Burton challenge from season two. She went on to add that Rayce and the Cellist and RJ with the Bellhop were phenomenal makeups. She really loves the comedical, whimsical, fantasy based challenges. I then asked her if she had any favorite contestants and she told me, “That’s like asking who my favorite child is.” She said that she couldn’t pick just one.
I then asked her what her favorite part of hosting Face Off on SyFy is and she had a list of things that she loved about it. I mean, what’s not to love? “Everything, from start to finish with every episode. From finding out the challenge, to where we’re going to be,” she added that she loves when they go somewhere that has some kind of history to it. She also loves the clothing, shoes and accessories that she gets to wear on set, the artistry, the contestants, watching them work the challenges and seeing how things look on stage. Of course, she also adds working with her father is on her list of favorite things about working on Face Off.
Another question that I asked her was why she thought Face Off has been so successful? I for one, never really thought about the special effects and makeup all that much, I just knew that it grabbed my attention. I told her that I felt like not everyone pay that close attention to it. She told me, “It’s not that no one paid attention to it, it’s an area of the industry that no body really knew much about and I love that this show gives people a birds-eye view of this area of movie magic and movie making, it’s that look into the world of unsung heroes that no body really spoke of.”
She added that there are guys and girls in the back of a lab working so hard and never really get any credit. She believes that fans love the show because of the imagination and how great it can be and the instant visual gratification that is right there within that hour and if gives you something to walk away with. She added that she loves the family aspect too, that she has gotten many messages on Social Media about how this show has brought them together on a Tuesday night, or how this show inspired someone to get into this industry as a profession.
As for spoilers, yes there were some, she mentions that for one of the episodes, she becomes an Ordained Minister and marries seven couples right there on the show! She also added that this finale is by far, the best finale ever for Face Off. She didn’t want to give anything away, but she doesn’t know how they are going to top this finale!
At the end of the interview, she wanted everyone to know that she has launched a cosmetic line on QVC called Westmore Beauty. In August, they will be coming out with new shades for their foundation and in September they will be launching a semi permanent tattoo eye brow gel with hair-like fibers that lasts days. It is water proof, transfer-proof, smudge proof, it will last two to three days. In October they will be launching a semi permanent tattoo eye shadow! Keep your eyes open for her new products on QVC and make sure you watch Face Off Season 9 premiering July 28th!
