Project Runway 2012 is back for its third episode, and it promises to be a dramatic one: designing Emmy outfits for former designers. And from last week’s previews, it looks like we’ll be getting visits from some of the more outspoken past designers from the show! Who will be left standing when the fabric and words are done flying? Find out here in tonight’s Project Runway season 10 recap!
On the Project Runway 2012 runway host Heidi Klum reveals the basic challenge: create a red carpet look for the Emmy’s. She then sends them off to see mentor Tim Gunn who will fill in the details. And what details they are! Twist #1: everyone will be assigned a Lexus GS and they must base the color off the designs off the color of their car. Bonus: They get to drive their car to meet who they’re designing for! Twist #2: it’s—dun-dun-dun—the first team challenge. You can practically see their brains explode! They hop in their rides and go to meet their clients. Twist #3: They are past designers! The pairs are as follows:
Christopher and Andrea: Anya Ayoung-Chee, winner season 9
Sonjia and Nathan: Valerie Mayan, season 8
Elena and Buffi: Lauran Bennett, season 3
Ven and Fabio: Kenley Collins, season 5
Gunnar and Kooan: Irina Shabayeva, winner season 6
Dmitry and Melissa: April Johnston, season 8
Alicia and Raul: Mila Hermanovski, season 7
(I’m already drooling at the trainwreck that is about to ensue. Irina, Gunnar, and Kooan together? Kenley, Ven, and Fabio? This is like an early Christmas present!)
They consult and I can already feel the tension—I mean, excitement building. Then it’s off to sketching and Mood. Gunnar is already off and running with soundbites: “When it comes to fashion I’m kind of a controlling bitch. I don’t even know if he’s seen the Emmy’s.” Good luck, Kooan!
The Project Runway 2012 designers are starting to work when Tim comes in to announce Twist #4: The winning designers get to accompany their client to the Emmy’s. Dang!
So far everyone is getting along well enough. Kooan is, of course, stressed by Gunnar, and Elena doesn’t trust Buffi with construction. Buffi is in charge of pleating fabric and is a little irritated she’s not more involved in said construction. I guess she doesn’t realize she can’t be trusted! Ven feels he is stuck with Fabio: “Basic things he does not understand.” Ouch. Dmitry and Melissa are dealing with the nightmare that is silk charmeuse but at least they’re getting on well. Then it’s back on Elena who is being a little high strung. She’s starting to stress me out.
Tim brings the clients in to the Project Runway season 10 workroom for some visits. First is Irina, who always gave me the chills. She looks doubtful as Gunnar and Kooan explain their vision. “I can’t tell if it’s arrogance or confusion. I just want to smack her,” is Gunnar’s take. “I don’t even want to deal with her. I wanted Kenley.” OF COURSE YOU DID. April, who is sporting some pinkish purplish hair, likes what Dmitry and Melissa are doing. Mila is concerned about sporting print on the red carpet, as the main fabric Raul and Alicia picked out is a black and red zebra type thing. Raul likes the print. Conundrum! But he’s willing to work with it. Good thing they bought black fabric as well. Kenley informs Ven that he has great taste in fabric. Please, feed his ego more. She also deems it adorable leaving me shocked that Ven may have managed to make Kenley happy. Oh, and Fabio is there too. Valerie, who I completely forgot about, is happy with her design. Anya likes hers but feels it needs more fabric in the front or the back. No problem, Andrea says, pull some fabric out of the trash and make a boat neck. Chris is not pleased with this turn of events. Andrea is all over it. “What is she talking about?” he disparages.
Laura is a classy so I feel for her when she consults with her team. She does love the design but points out that it’s ambitious. Elena looks like her head is about to do an Exorcist 360 turn. Buffi attempts to calm her down, to which she snaps, “I’m calm. Don’t tell me to calm down.” Rule #1 of being calm: If you feel the need to inform someone loudly that you are calm, you are, in fact, not. She then leaves the room. Rule #2 of being calm: If you are calm you don’t slam the door and run off like a babycrier. Buffi goes to look for her and can’t find her. The other designers urge Buffi to carry on. That’s what Tim Gunn would say, yeah? Elena finally comes back to the sewing room, leading Buffi to say, “It sounds like there’s a chainsaw in there. I know it’s her.” Rule #3 of being calm: If the word chainsaw can be used to describe you, you are not calm. As usual we can count on Christopher for the words we’re lacking: “Elena’s personality sometimes seems she escaped from the woods and she’s ravenous and she will bite your head off.” Elena’s take on Elena is that she’s from the Ukraine. She basically makes it sound like it’s the scariest place in the world. Like if you live there and are polite you’re weak then you will starve in the street like a dog.
A quick client fitting seems to go fine, although Andrea is going at the speed of a turtle. The day of the show arrives and the mad dash to finish commences. Andrea is now struggling with marrowing. I don’t know what that is but I imagine she should know how to do it, right? Kooan is also struggling, though with Irina, who is demanding to know why he isn’t fixing their dress. According to Kooan, “For some reason I just feel sad, not happy. And if I’m happy I can just work forever but if I’m sad, I can’t do things.” That’s called depression, my friend. Irina is not pleased and instructs them exactly how to fix what’s wrong. She has no time for depression!
Back on the Project Runway 2012 runway we meet the judges: the usual suspects of Heidi, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia, and guest judge Krysten Ritter which I am psyched about because she is completely awesome. After an interesting show, Heidi reveals that the Dmitrty, Melissa, Buffi, Elena, Sonjia, and Nathan are all safe. Of course this makes Elena grumpy. We are also finally in agreement in something: our shock over Gunnar and Kooan being in the top.
First off they talk with the higher scoring teams, starting with Ven and Fabio. Kenley loves her look. I’ve never seen her so happy! It’s actually kind of disconcerting. The judges also have a lovefest over it. Though it isn’t Krysten’s favorite which is reason #101 I love her. Then we’re on to Irina’s look. She seems as surprised as I am that her dress is in the top. Krysten likes the high neck and Michael likes the silhouette. Kooan gives all the credit to Gunnar who of course looks like he expected to receive it.
In the bottom they first talk to a clearly unhappy Mila, who frets over the obvious fit issues and the fact that it’s not flattering. The judge’s take on Raul and Alicia’s not-so-little black dress? Boring, frumpy, and zero effort are all mentioned. Then there’s Anya. Heidi first asks an obviously distraught Christopher his take, and he informs her it is awful and he is mortified. And the judges? Dated, clichéd, Halloween costume, pageant, old-fashioned, and walking Hershey Bar are all descriptors that they use. This is followed by Andrea and Christopher spending the next five minutes arguing over who should be blamed. Can I add that Krysten Ritter makes THE best faces?
So who’s the winner? Ven, of course. Go figure. I hope he and Kenley are very happy together. Maybe she can teach him to put inflection in his voice. Fabio, Kooan, and Gunnar join him in safety, as do Christopher and Andrea. So between Raul and Alicia, who is in? Alicia. That means Raul is out which is a loss for the Midwest. But he takes it well. In true Mid-western style! (He lives in a city near mine, OK?)
So next week—wait! There’s more! The next morning Melissa tells Buffi that Andrea is missing! This is followed by the ominous classic line, “To be continued….”
So, next week! It looks like Michael Kors will be involved in the challenge and we will find out what happens in the Case of The Missing Andrea. How will the designers react? It looks like not well. Don’t miss next week’s Project Runway 2012 recap to find out the continuation of the saga!
