On last week’s episode of True Blood season 5, one very important character saw his demise. In classic twist fashion, it appeared one character was about to die but another was staked instead. But is this really the end of that character?
In the final minutes of True Blood season 5 episode 6 – “Hopeless”, Roman was about to give Russell the true dead, when the machine attached to Russell malfunctioned and Russell quickly overpowered Roman and staked him. Roman didn’t completely explode, like True Blood vampires tend to do, but it appears he is dead. But is he?

Supernatural shows, like True Blood, often kill off characters and bring them back when fans have already mourned and accepted the loss of their beloved character. Roman wasn’t on the show long enough for fans to really love or hate him. But Christopher Meloni is a major actor that many fans love to see in anything, so why would True Blood let him go so soon, especially with so much untold story about Roman’s character?
Christopher Meloni teased in some interviews this week that his character, for the time being, is gone. But his hints left the impression that Roman may rise again. So let’s examine why this may or may not be the end of Roman.
He’s too boring to return
Though Christopher Meloni is a great actor, Roman felt like a flat character. He wasn’t particularly scary or interesting. Of all the new characters introduced so far this season, he was the least interesting one. Characters like Salome, Patrick, Nora, and, even brief moments of Molly, were way more interesting than Roman’s speeches. The True Blood season 5 writers seemed to have no real clear direction for him, so his death wasn’t that shocking. And the writers did a better job at showcasing Salome (who is probably the traitor) than they ever did with Roman.
So, in a way, it seems like the True Blood 2012 writers were trying to keep the fans neutral about Roman so his death wouldn’t be too mourned. Think about it, were you really sad to see Roman die? But if Russell died, so soon on True Blood season 5, it be a little more devastating, right? Roman was interesting in the same way many authority figure characters are: you want to see how far their madness goes, but you grow no real emotional attachment to them.
He shall rise again
Roman’s death was ambiguous; so that means the writers are leaving room for him to return later in the season or next season? Though, a new vampire, Lilith, may prove to be a worthy opponent against Russell, there aren’t many that can truly take him on. Therefore, Roman may return for the simple fact that he may be one of the few that can stop Russell. Just like Russell’s escape from the grave, the writers may just wait for the shock factor and have Roman rise up again against Russell when fans begin to forget him.
Plus Lilith is apparently this great powerful vampire and maybe one of her powers is to resurrect vampires, so her return may be the key to bringing Roman back. And in a state the obvious moment, Christopher Meloni has a pretty big fanbase and the writers may not want to lose that by completely killing his character off. Many people watched or got excited about True Blood season 5 because Christopher Meloni joined the cast, so would the writers really get rid of the actor so soon?
As shocking as Roman’s death on True Blood season 5, there are more shocking moments ahead for True Blood season 5, so we’ll all have to stay tune to see how it all progresses.
On tonight’s episode of True Blood 2012, will more be revealed about Roman’s death or possible resurrection? Are you excited to meet Lilith? Are you sad to see Roman go? Do you think he’ll return?
