A gunman entered a screening of The Dark Knight Rises last night in Aurora, CO, and proceeded to kill twelve people and injured 50 others. This is tragic and sad to even write about and makes me wonder what goes through people’s minds to do something like this. The incident, which took place about 12:30 a.m. at the Century 16 movie theater, occurred during midnight screenings of the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.
The gunman came through the emergency exit of the theater, threw a smoke or tear bomb and then proceeded to open fire on theater patrons who tried to move. Witnesses told The Today Show that the gunman seemed to have no motive and was just shooting at anyone. According to witnesses on the scene, some of the bullets also went through the walls of an adjacent theater, injuring patrons.
The suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes, was found at his car, which was parked right outside of the movie theater. He was dressed in black, carrying a knife, rifle and a handgun, and wearing a bulletproof vest. Holmes also was wearing a gas mask when he entered the theater. He told authorities that his apartment was “booby-trapped” and he also had explosives in his car, which none were found. Authorities have evacuated the building for precautionary measures.
There is no known motive for these tragic shootings at The Dark Knight Rises premiere and it appears that James Holmes was working alone. The Today Show reported that his mother said it sounds like him and she is on her way to Colorado. The mother lives in California and the license plates on James Holmes’ car were from Tennessee. This is all so crazy and I am intrigued to hear more details.
