Rihanna ‘Russian Roulette’ Single Evokes Abuse by Chris Brown

The first single from Rihanna‘s upcoming album, Rated R, was released on Tuesday. “Russian Roulette” is a dark, somber song that can’t help but evoke the singer’s past relationship with abusive boyfriend Chris Brown.

Rihanna

“Russian Roulette” was co-written and produce by Ne-Yo, who also co-wrote her 2006 hit song “Unfaithful.” The song tells the story of a woman faced with a game of Russian roulette at gunpoint and eerily ends with a gunshot.

You can see it through my chest/That I’m terrified/But I’m not leaving/I know that I must pass this test/So just pull the trigger,” the lyrics read in part. “As my life flashes before my eyes/ I’m wondering, will I ever see another sunrise?/ So many won’t get the chance to say goodbye/ But it’s too late to pick up the value of my life.”

The creepy lyrics bring to mind Rihanna’s previous relationship with Chris Brown, which ended after he physically assaulted her. Brown pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the domestic violence incident and was sentenced to community labor and five years of probation.

Rihanna’s new album, Rated R, is scheduled for release on November 23.

STFU you ppl who are saying this song isnt about Chris are a bunch of hooligans! She CO-WROTE this song with Ne-Yo and I AM SURE they didn’t come up with this song randomly. When you write songs, you write them about your experiences, other peoples experiences, etc. When they wrote this song, they knew what it was about, and so should you all. Stop living under a rock and wake the F up. Smell the coffffffeeee! This song is about abuse, Rihanna’s abuse.

I agree with Yas, I strongly disbelieve she made this song with him in mind, I just think that y’all wish she did, so you could have something to talk about. I personally would like for them to get back together though, because when they were together they seemed so in love and so happy with each other… but I love the song, I think it’s classic Rihanna, and I can’t wait for the CD to come out in November.
    Welcome Back Riri!
God Bless both Chris & Rihanna.

It’s interesting the assumption here that the article is saying the song was written about Chris Brown. In reading it again, it seems pretty clear the article is saying the lyrics of the song evoke the history of Rihanna’s relationship with Chris Brown. In other words, hearing or reading the lyrics – the reader/listener can’t seem to help thinking about the Chris Brown assault on Rihanna because of the underlying violence of the song’s lyrics and the he/she imagery. So yes, the song may just be a random song, but because Rihanna sang it after being the victim of physical violence – it’s hard not to think about Brown’s assault on her – if you are aware of the story – when listening to it.

  6. Yas says:

LOL, how did you come up with that conclusion. I think people really want this to be about Chris, even if it was not intended to. But to conjour up that observation from this song is a little far fetched don’t you think?

  7. Macy says:

    I concur… this is getting old….

  8. Stephanie says:

Co-sign that Tracie! I agree the song is just a song and doesn’t have to be about any person or event in particular…s

I do have to admit that i’m not a huge fan of the song tho. I mean it’s not horrible and i think it’s an ok track to be on the album but i’m hoping it’s not reflecting the tone of the rest of the album cause i don’t think i could buy it…too dark – almost depressing!

  9. Tracie says:

Well if you follow that logic that means that Unfaithful was written about her relationship with Chris! Give me a break! You’re really reaching on this one. The song is just a song….let her past be her past! She’s trying to move on and so is he stop making everything they do about that relationship. Geesh!
