True Blood 2012: Season 5 Exclusive Interview with Jacob Hopkins

On the fourth episode of True Blood season 5, called “We’ll Meet Again”,  one of the Vampire Authority members was revealed to be a traitor and was murdered by Roman. The traitor was the child vampire, authority member, Chancellor Alexander Drew. Alexander Drew is played by talented young actor named Jacob Hopkins, who debuted on True Blood June 17. Gossip & Gab recently got the opportunity to speak with Hopkins about his character on True Blood, things he does for fun, and whether his character will return to the show.

Jacob Hopkins may only be ten years old but he’s already tallied up an impressive acting resume. He was discovered at the tender age of five when he accompanied his father, who is an actor (and his acting coach), to a meeting with his agent. The agent was immediately taken with Hopkins. Within weeks, he was cast in his first role, as the adorable Brian in the film, The Minis.

Hopkins credits include a featured guest role on How I Met Your Mother, a starring role in the webseries RVCR, and a supporting role in the feature film, Priest. Priest also stars his True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer. Hopkins also lent his talents to the short film Just a Little Heart Attack, playing the precocious child of Elizabeth Banks, who also directed the movie. The film was created to be featured as part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red Campaign.

When I asked Jacob about his favorite acting experience thus far, he said True Blood and his new webseries called Supermoms. He enjoys working on Supermoms, which can be viewed on Facebook, because all the moms have super powers and that makes them cool.

Alexander Drew, the youngest (looking) member of the Vampire Authority on True Blood, was turned at the age of nine. Jacob’s character is an impetuous vamp who likes to taunt those around him. Jacob told us he really enjoyed working on the set of True Blood because the entire cast was really nice. His favorite actor to work with was Christopher Heyerdahl (who plays another vampire authority member, Dieter Braun). He also enjoyed working with Christopher Meloni. His fellow actors say he is amazingly talented and a “real pro” on set.

Jacob enthusiastically recounted the excitement of  being on such a popular show as True Blood to us. He was especially excited when he learned of his character’s dramatic demise, but he shocked, like many viewers, to learn Chancellor’s Drew was the traitor. One interesting thing many people may not have realized was that Jacob had to be suspended on a harness to film that scene, which added an extra layer of fun for Jacob.

Jacob has never watched a full episode of True Blood because of the show’s adult content and the crew made sure to limit his access to what he was exposed to on the set. So worried parents can be reassured the True Blood team kept it PG for Jacob.

One of Jacob’s favorite things about being an actor is all the new people he meets. He loves being on sets of different productions and he really enjoys the new experiences and making new friends.  One of his favorite actors is Johnny Depp, for his since of humor. Plus they also now share a vampire bond both playing vampires. (Depp played Barnabas Collins in the movie remake of the classic TV series Dark Shadows.) Maybe one day he’ll get to act along side Mr. Depp. If Jacob’s career progresses like it has, that is certainly a possibility.

Currently in the fourth grade and a member of the Gifted and Talented Program at his school, Hopkins lives in Los Angeles with his parents and older brother, Gerad. When Hopkins is not acting, like many boys he enjoys playing video games, especially Mario Bros, with his brother. He also really enjoys Taekwondo and has already earned a brown belt. This belt symbolizes that he has  learned the basic skills of  Taekwondo and developed a deep understanding of it. With so much going on in Jacob’s life, it’s great to see he still gets to enjoy being a kid.

Jacob resides in Los Angeles with his parents and older brother, Gerad. He is in the fourth grade and is a proud member of the Gifted and Talented Program at his school. He is an accomplished martial artist and currently holds a brown belt in Taekwondo. He has participated in a number of competitions and taken home many gold and silver medals. In his spare time, Jacob enjoys playing sports, reading, drawing, and spending time with family and friends.

Hopkins has many projects in the works, but he kept them hush-hush, so you’ll have to continue to check his IMDB page to learn what’s next for Jacob Hopkins. And when we asked Jacob if his character of Chancellor Drew might return he said “It’s True Blood, you never know.” We’ve certainly seen other True Blood characters return from the dead, so anything is possible!
