Dallas TV Show: Episode 2 Recap – The Price You Pay

The Dallas TV Show is back after twenty years.  After last week’s two hour premiere, Dallas on TNT is starting off the season with plenty of drama.  The Dallas TV show, which originally ran from 1978-1991, was known for its star studded drama, twists and turns, and cliff hanger endings.  The new Dallas is no different.

The original Ewing brothers, Bobby and JR are back, along with Bobby’s son Christopher and JR’s son John Ross.  The family farm, Southfork, is the center of the tension, which heated up last week after John Ross found a goldmine of oil on the land.  Oil has always been a family battle.  This discovery would be great news, except in Miss Ellie’s will (Bobby and JR’s mom) it says that she does not want anyone to ever drill on Southfork land.

The Dallas TV Show premiere unfolded with a battle between cousins Christopher and John Ross fighting over who has the rights to Southfork.  John Ross believes it is his birth right to do what he pleases with Southfork because oil is in his blood and he is a true Ewing.  Christopher is Bobby’s adopted son and always feels the pressure to prove himself to the rest of the Ewing family.

On top of the competition with his cousin, Christopher is battling his dad Bobby who is trying to sell Southfork.  Christopher thinks his dad wants to sell Southfork solely to help fund his alternative energy business venture, but little does he know, his dad is dying of gastrointestinal tumor.

The Dallas TV Show drama doesn’t end there.  The premiere episode revealed that Christopher’s ex-fiance, Elena Ramos, who is the family cook’s daughter, is now with John Ross because of a mysterious email that was sent to her the day of their wedding.  The email appeared to be from Christopher, revealing he no longer wanted to be with her.  However, he never sent the email and John Ross now wants to find out who did because Christopher is convinced he did it.

Just when the audience thinks they can’t trust anybody except the innocent new wife of Christopher, Rebecca Sutter, she confesses to her brother Tommy that she doesn’t know if she can continue with their deal.   Most of the characters are double-dealing in some way or another, but the biggest double-dealer is John Ross.

After his father snaps out of his depressive state in the nursing home, John Ross seeks his help in getting Southfork back.  JR makes a deal with a fake Del Sol conservatory woman, Marta Del Sol, who pretends to be selling Southfork and preserving it for Bobby.  The deal is that after Southfork is sold it will be turned over to him.  Behind JR’s back Bobby is also dealing with Marta.  However, when JR discovers that Marta is not the real Marta Del Sol, in the new Dallas episode, he threatens John Ross that double dealing his daddy is not a wise move.  The two decided to team up in order to get back Southfork.

Rebecca continued to feel conflicted about pretending to be somebody she is not.  Her brother Tommy is working on blowing up the Southfork deal, while she is trying to mess up Christopher’s gas hydrate, alternative energy company that is developing a way to extract methane from ocean floors.  She lied to Tommy about not being able to insert a program onto Christopher’s computer. So Tommy is taking matters into his own hands.

Christopher needed to fix the current extraction method for his company because it is causing earthquakes and tsunamis.  With the help of Elena he successfully finds a new method of extraction using liquid carbon dioxide.  Christopher thinks that this will mean his dad won’t sell Southfork.

To get Southfork back JR and John Ross convince a nursing home resident to call Bobby and pretend to be JR’s physician.  He tells Bobby that Jr’s depression, which is why he is in the nursing home, has improved greatly because of Bobby’s visits to him.  He suggests that JR return to Southfork and live with Bobby so that he can continue to improve.  JR pretends to be on Bobby’s side by agreeing that Southfork should be sold to a conservatory, but he is really weaseling his way into stealing Southfork.

After Bobby had surgery to remove his tumor he decided to put the sale of Southfork on hold.  Bobby and John Ross are dealing with the same attorney, Mitch Lobel, who is also double dealing.  Mitch Lobel has agreed to help John Ross as long as he gets five million dollars; in exchange for keeping John Ross’s plan to get Southfork a secret.

Once news got out that the sale of Southfork was on hold Cliff Barnes, a Ewing family competitor, showed up wanting to buy Southfork himself. Bobby turned him down but JR is worried that Cliff will not give up until he gets Southfork.  John Ross won’t give up either.  After JR gave John Ross his mother’s, Sue Ellen’s, diary, John Ross confronts Bobby.  John Ross thinks he can get the courts to overturn Sue Ellen’s will, which states that she wants no drilling to take place, because of mental incompetence.  Her journal reveals that she spent time in a mental institution.  John Ross threatens to take it to court.  JR pretends to be anger with John Ross, even though it is all part of their plan.

Their plan worked.  Bobby signed papers to sell Southfork.  When Christopher found out his dad signed the papers his dad revealed to him that he had cancer.  Christopher was angry that his dad didn’t tell him sooner.  Christopher sought comfort in Elena, too much comfort.  The two kissed and Tommy was secretly recording it.

Tommy sent the image of Christopher and Elena kissing to Rebecca hoping it would push her to download the program on Christopher’s computer that would give Tommy access to Christopher’s files.  She was almost convinced to do it until Christopher came home and reminded her how much he loves her.  Rebecca threw the program in the trash.

The Dallas TV Show second episode ended with John Ross talking to a man he asked to dig up information on Mitch Lobel so that he doesn’t have to pay him to keep his mouth shut.  John Ross also asked him to look into who sent Elena the email posing as Christopher.  The sender was Rebecca, Christopher’s now wife.

Stephanie: if you’re going to be writing about Dallas, you really should watch the old episodes so you know their secrets and the nuances of their behavior. Sue Ellen, really? And to say that Cliff Barnes is a Ewing family competitor is like saying that Barack Obama has a job in government. Cliff was the brother of Pam, Bobby’s first wife, and the son of Digger Barnes, who was Jock Ewing’s original partner. Digger was an old-time suitor of Miss Ellie’s. One of the premises of the original show was that Jock screwed Digger out of his half of Ewing oil. Not to even mention Cliff Barnes’ affair with Sue Ellen and the possibility that he could have been John Ross’ father……

    • Claudia, there was a typo, which has now been corrected. The rest is a matter of flavor, which we appreciate you providing as an obvious original Dallas lover. :-)

  2. Donna Sweeney says:

The article is calling JR and Bobby’s mother Sue Ellen. Its Miss Ellie. Sue Ellen is John Ross Jr Mother, Jrs Ex wife.
