What I love the most about NBC’s The Voice is that the competition never keeps the coaches from having a real appreciation and respect for the artistry of all their vocalists. The show attracts high levels of talent and honestly, the most talented isn’t necessarily who takes the trophy. Historically, The Voice has supported and showcased various alumni who did not take the top spot. This is a good thing, because it seems to me the first major breakout star – their first Kelly Clarkson type of star – is poised to be from their season three top six group. The quirky indie artist, Melanie Martinez is releasing her first EP for Atlantic Records on May 19th.
Doing a rendition of the Brittney Spears song “Toxic,” Martinez was just 17 when she got three chairs to turn for her back 2012 – ultimately choosing to work with coach Adam Levine.
At the time I thought her turning a Brittney Spears song into an artsy coffee-house tune clearly showed she had real talent and vision. Now it’s two years later and she’s on a major label releasing her first EP. Her first single, “Dollhouse” already has over a million hits on YouTube!
Martinez always had an interesting visual arts aspect to her vocal performances on The Voice and judging from the video she still has uses that approach in presenting her music. Truly, she is a multifaceted artist!
Currently, the “Dollhouse” single is on itunes: iTunes/Dollhouse. However Billboard has an exclusive pre-release streaming of the entire EP over at www.billboard.com Head over there and take a listen – if you like what you hear, pre-order the whole EP for 4.95! ( Preorder the Dollhouse EP here!)
