MasterChef 2012: Season Three Premiere Part 2-Recap

On tonight’s Masterchef 2012, Joe Bastianich, Gordon Ramsey and Graham Elliot, once again, took the judges seat for round two of the two part MasterChef season 3 premiere. As last night’s episode showed, you never know exactly who, or what to expect when the home cooks step in front of the respected panel of chefs.

The home cooks on this MasterChef 2012 episode were probably some of the most colorful contenders.  They included a string of cowboys, very awkward women (including a witch), and a man with a monkey (no that isn’t a euphemism). Continue on  to read more of the wacky antics from tonight….

So the first contestant to present to the judges on tonight’s episode was a woman named Felix. She tried to come off confident, but really came off awkward.  I mean can you say “me love you long time” and not scream “I’m really socially awkward. I should not be put on television”? Unlike yesterday with Monte Crystal, Joe Bastianch was buying what Felix was selling, but Gordon Ramsey was not. The votes were split, but Graham Elliot sided with Joe Bastianch and sent her through, but not without giving her the warning to not be cocky.

The next story was about an Italian named Lucca. The producers cleverly manipulated viewers into believing he would make it, by showing a lot of his personal story, and mentioning how the producers flew his mother in to witness him cook.  After some cute moments between mother and son, Lucca went in to see the judges and after speaking in Italian with Joe Bastianich, the judges ultimately decided he wasn’t ready for the competition. No love for Italy.

The judges continued to confuse viewers with the introduction of Hyza, who seemed a little like a fish out of water. She  forgot her rolling pin, and talked more than she cooked. Surprisingly, the judges loved her dessert and sent her to the next round.

After that there was a montage of cowboys, that ended on a segment about a cowboy named Mike. Mike began to cry as he told the camera he was doing this for his sister. His sister died six months ago from a car accident. Mike’s story went from heartfelt to weird as he came in to the judges’ room riding  on a horse.  The judges were skeptical about his ability to last in the competition but they gave him an apron.

Then it was time for the romantic portion of the show as husband and wife, Laura and AJ, competed to see who was the better chef. And people say romance is dead. I can’t imagine any other way to  build a stronger bond then going on a reality show, and competing against one another. Both contestants received aprons.

Next, the show really got weird with a montage of some people cooking with porcupine balls and squirrel pie. So you know they were from….um not a major metropolitan area. One of these people, the most normal, a guy named Bubba impressed the judges and received an apron.

The show continued with a comedian named Craig, who was big in personality, but not in flavor. He received a split vote, but ultimately he didn’t receive an apron.

Then there was a series of “tough guys” that all failed to receive an apron. That was until Frank. He asked Joe to smile as he tasted his meal.  I’m pretty sure a smile from Joe is the same as finding Narmia for these contestants.

Gordon Ramsey wasn’t a fan of Frank’s food, and neither were the other two judges. But Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliot had faith in his ability, so the voted for him to receive an apron.

Like last night, the final contestant was one to cause tears. Solider Joel, from Jamaica, cooked his dish and then when he began to speak about why he was doing this, he mentioned his son’s death. He began crying and all three judges watched not sure how to respond. Eventually, two out of three voted for him to receive an apron.

So now that, that round is done, who is your favorite MasterChef 2012? Who was the standout for MasterChef 2012? And who do you already think is the frontrunner for MasterChef 2012?

  1. This is the Flavor Elevator checking in. Thanks for watching #masterchef and for making these great recaps. Lots of solid contestants this season, but I didn’t see anyone nearly as passionate or charismatic as Ryan. Once you sift through the sob stories, this guy seems like the one with the burning desire to win Masterchef- Season 3. Do you see anyone who wants it as bad?

I don’t know if the flavor elevator had the best dish of the episode, but he was the only contestant with real passion and willingness to speak his mind to the judges. Plus, he had them cracking up. I’d like to see the elevator go all the way to the top!
