Tonight’s live recap of American Idol 2014 will feature live performances from the top 12 of American Idol Season 13, and the American Idol judges 2014, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr., along with the help of this season’s new mentor and former judge, Randy Jackson, are all guiding the contestants into perfecting their talents so that they can become even stronger performers on stage. Though they’re all talented, some have more star power than others, which is obviously a big factor for people when voting each week for their favorite contestants.
On last week’s performance show, the theme was, “This is Me,” in which the contestants sang a song that best summed up who they are as artists. Genres included country, rock and pop. Some vocal performances were stronger than others, while quite a few contestants appeared to be nervous during their performances. In the end, the bottom 3 were MK Nobilette, Malaya Watson and Kristen O’Connor. Kristen was voted off, and the judges ultimately decided against using their one and only save on her. The theme for tonight’s performance round is, “Home.” Let’s watch together!

Jena Irene – “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall
Judges: Keith said he loves seeing a different side of her. He is not mad about the song for her, but he liked seeing her open up more. Jennifer said it doesn’t matter what song she sings, but the uniqueness of her voice makes each song her own and she loves that about her. Harry said she made different choices in the melody, but he was waiting for her to bust out and show he age more.
Alex Preston – “I Don’t Want To Be” by Gavin DeGraw
Judges: Jennifer said she loves the suit and he looks like he belongs on stage. She said it wasn’t his best vocal performance and the arrangement he did did not suit the song. Harry said he is pretty special at standing up there and singing an intimate song. It just sounded like he was overpowered, but admires he tried to do something different. Keith said it was like he was like he was not sure how to be in the song with everything going on.
Jessica Meuse – “White Flag” by Dido
Judges: Harry said it felt understated. She was sharp the whole time and she normally sings like a laser beam, but she was off and he doesn’t think she was present in the performance. Keith said he loves the way she sings and her musicality, but he doesn’t agree about the pitch issue. Jennifer said she looks great and she feels that she is comfortable, but it isn’t coming off that way. She was sharp and it didn’t happen today.
Dexter Roberts – “Lucky Man” by Montgomery Gentry
Judges: Keith said that was the perfect song and he showed his vulnerable side. Jennifer said that was a great thing and he needs to come out and surprise them every week. Harry said it was the best performance of the night and he was great.
Emily Piriz – “Let’s Get Loud” by Jennifer Lopez
Judges: Jennifer said it makes her happy to her she was listening to this and it is a pleasure for her and thinks she did a really good job. Harry said it took a lot of courage to sing that song and it is a big locomotive and she needs to drive that train and it was too big for her tonight. Keith said he loved it!
Caleb Johnson – “Working Man” by Rush
Judges: Harry said he is unquestionably the most consistent performer on the show, but there is a difference between being consistent and being predictable and wants to know what he can do to not be predictable. Keith said he is one of the best singers he has heard in a long, long time and he has an amazing gift. Jennifer said he is what she has been waiting for all night and knows he will bring more out as the season goes on.
MK Nobilette – “Drops of Jupiter” by Train
Judges: Keith said it was a good song choice and her vocals are fine, but she has to keep working on connecting how she looks and how she sings. Jennifer said it was a nice song for her, but it was not a breakout performance from her and we need that from them at this point in the competition on American Idol 2014. Harry said he gets the feeling that she still doesn’t want to be here and practice on things that are hard and she will improve!
CJ Harris – “Waiting on the World To Change” by John Mayer
Judges: Jennifer said this is what music is all about and glad he was thinking about that when he chose his song. Harry said that is an example of someone singing sharp, but connecting with the lyrics and it can happen. Keith said the only thing missing for him is making the song his own.
Sam Woolf – “Just One” by Blind Pilots
Judges: Harry said he really likes the lyrics of this song and it was a pleasant performance, but the emotional dynamics have to change. Keith said the tone of his voice is like butter and it is so good. Jennifer said we need to start seeing some super wow performances and he needs to start pushing out of his comfort zone.
Malaya Watson – “Take Me To The King” by Tamela Mann
Judges: Keith said that is a beautiful song and great choice and it encompassed the vulnerability in her voice. Jennifer said she got goosies all over and was with her from the very first moment she opened her mouth. Harry said this felt very focused, but the message was there and he is very proud of her.
Ben Briley – “Turning Home” by David Nail
Judges: Jennifer said the beginning was not in sync, but by the end he had it and the feeling was there. Harry said he did not connect with it and it felt shouted. Keith said he has an incredible voice and to be in charge of it, but where he takes it will affect him. There was so much focus on the technicality, so he lost the emotion of the song.
Majesty Rose – “Fix You” by Coldplay
Judges: Harry said she looks like she belongs on that stage and has a lot of confidence and enjoyed the beginning, but wish she stayed in that quiet zone. Jennifer said you don’t always have to go big. Keith said he agrees, but knows we will be seeing her next week!
