The Bachelorette 2012 Week 4: The Dark Sides of The Bachelors

In week three of The Bachelorette 2012, we leave Charlotte, North Carolina, as The Bachelorette Emily Maynard and her slew of handsome men head to the beautiful island of Bermuda. Even little Ricki gets to go; the short scenes with her now and then are pretty darn cute, I must admit. All the guys are excited, driving up to a beautiful mansion (this show if full of those!) on motorcycles.

The first one-on-one date goes to single dad, Doug. Arie is ready for Doug to go home and break up the whole football team type gang of guys who make up the “bromance,” as he calls it. Everybody teases Doug as he’s nervous about his date, making him angry. Emily walks into a room and feels the tension. Doug and The Bachelorette Emily Maynard get out of there! They go shopping, sampling chocolates, sniffing perfumes, and, of course, buying something for Ricki. Emily thinks the conversation is easy between the two of them. He talks about being a dad and starting a charity, which impresses good-hearted Emily Maynard. Emily has the idea to respond to Austin’s (Doug’s son) letter with a postcard, which Doug appreciates. Aw . . . . Appreciation all around! Then they walk through an arch and make a wish, as is Bermudian tradition. Now, on to dinner!

Doug reminds The Bachelorette Emily Maynard of former fiancée Brad Womack, as they both seem too perfect, always coming up with the right thing to say. Emily forgives Doug, though, when she can’t come up with much about herself after being asked the same question. Doug gets the rose, but no kiss, though. Hmmmm . . . . Emily has a funny look on her face; is the connection really there?

Group date participants Charlie, Ryan, Chris, Jef, Sean, Arie, Travis, and Kalon have a quick sailing lesson and then compete in a race to win more time with The Bachelorette Emily Maynard. The yellow team wins, giving Emily a smaller group to spend time with that evening. Charlie cries—yes, literally—as the orange losers have to leave, disappointed. Arie grabs some alone time with Emily and quickly steals a passionate kiss. Jef is nervous, as he’s a regular group dater only, but Emily is pleased that he is finally opening up to her and kisses his finger that was injured from sailing, later expressing disappointment that Jef didn’t also kiss her. Ryan fooled me early on, but now his ego is coming out. Emily tries to figure him out, but he won’t answer her questions directly, one of which was if he really meant his “fat” comment last week. Ryan goes on to tell Emily how she has such an opportunity to impact so many people and how it bothered him to see her kiss Arie in the hallway. Emily feels judged, stating that the ole double standard comes to play for the bachelorette. Kalon doesn’t impress me much on this date, but Jef does, and he gets the rose.

Back at the ranch, the guys argue over what a difference age makes in a guy. Chris doesn’t like it, as he’s only 25, according to 33 year old Doug. Speaking of tension, we’re now on the dreaded two-on-one date asks for John “Wolf” and Quiet Guy Nate to explore the Bermuda Love Triangle! Boating and jumping off a really tall cliff is the first order of business, where the guys get to show their fun sides. Dinner is in a really cool cave on a really awkward date, where they talk about how they’re not going to eat their quinoa. Better drink up, then! Nate finally gets some alone time with Emily and a chance to open up and cry a little bit when he talks about his parents and amazing brother. Emily is impressed. What about the Wolf? He admits to Emily that he hasn’t said “Hey, look at me” to her. Emily likes that he is who he is. When it comes down to it, John Wolf is the one who is chosen. Poor Nate. He was just too young and inexperienced in life for The Bachelorette Emily Maynard.

Let’s move on to the rose ceremony. Doug, Jef, and John are safe, as the guys discuss who might be on the chopping block. Ryan is over-confident, of course. Alejandro is a bit worried since he hasn’t had much time with Emily. Emily, when with Ryan, says she is trying to be more of a “bad ass.” Go, Emily! Who then steals her away? None other than Arie, who presses Emily on what she likes about him. Arie may be all right, but he can’t seem to keep his hands off Emily. It’s her leg tonight.

Ryan talks to long-haired Michael (has Emily spent any time with him?) about how he knows the media and may ask if he can be the next The Bachelor star. What an egotistical blow-hard! Meanwhile, Sean is still bummed about losing in the sailing contest. Emily reassures him that she feels really strongly about him. They talk about how Ricki would feel if she got married. Nice kisses at the end!

Doug and Ryan aren’t too worried about kissing Emily, as they’re so secure in themselves, a bit over-secure if you ask me. Chris feels the need to reassure Emily that he is ready to be a husband and father. Emily seems cool with that. Chris also stands up to Doug, who, to me, reacts defensively. I’m just not sure about that guy.

So, who is Emily sure about? She is aware that Ryan and Doug are centered around the arguments in the house. Emily tells Host Chris Harrison that she knows when she’s being manipulated. He likes this candid side of her. So do I!

Sean gets the first rose, followed by Arie, Travis, and Chris. The controversial Ryan is then chosen. Next is Kalon, with the final rose going to Alejandro. What about the Michael guy who never had any time with her? What was that about? He sheds a few tears, as does Charlie (no surprise there).

Stay tuned for next week’s The Bachelorette 2012 as Emily Maynard and her Season 8 bachelors see the amazing sights of London!
