When So You Think You Can Dance 2012 premieres tonight at 8/7c on FOX, you can expect some big changes for Season 9, including two winners! The auditions kick off So You Think You Can Dance season 9 tonight and we will get a look at dancers from New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas and Salt Lake City. Returning for SYTYCD 9 are host Cat Deeley and resident judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy. Helping out with the judging responsibilities this season are Debbie Allen, Lil’ C, Tyce Diorio, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Adam Shankman.
Big changes are coming for So You Think You Can Dance 2012…up first, the show will only air once a week! After it’s premiere tonight, So You Think You Can Dance 9 will switch to it’s regular time slot of Wednesdays at 8/7c. That means we are going to have two-hours of non-stop dancing, which will be nice, but they are also taking a night away from…not cool.
How the new format will work…per usual, each week the contestants will be paired up and dance to routines choreographed by some of the greatest choreographers in the business. Here is where the change comes for SYTYCD 9…the dancers won’t be eliminated until the next week, compared to the next night like in seasons past. The couples in danger of going home from the previous week’s performances will be asked to perform solo routines and dance for their lives. From those routines, the judges will decide which male and female are eliminated. Got that all?
When we get down to the Top 10 on So You Think You Can Dance 2012, all of the finalists will be joined by a So You Think You Can Dance All-Star dancer. The All-Stars will be experts in certain styles of dance…Ballroom, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Contemporary and Jazz…and will partner with one of the Top 10 finalists to perform in their specialty. From that point on, one dancer will be sent home each week.
To add to all this mumble-jumble, Nigel Lythgoe has also tweeted out a new format for So You Think You Can Dance 2012…there will be two winners of SYTYCD 9…a Top Guy and a Top Girl! In an interview, Lythgoe explained: “We are down to one two-hour show each week. We are changing it up. We are going to have two winners this year, one male and one female. It’s something that we wonder why we didn’t do it in the first place. We should have done it years ago!”
Why the change and why now? Nigel Lythgoe explains: “Each one brings something different to the table. We can split up the numbers and have America vote for their favorite guy and girl, so why not do it?”
I think this is a great idea…guys and girls dance so much differently, so why not have a Top Guy and Top Girl on So You Think You Can Dance Season 9? The one-day-a-week thing is probably going to kill me and it is going to be so jam-packed I think Fox may change it up, depending on how this season works out…what do you all think?
