This week on the American Idol 2012 top 6 performance show, each of the remaining contestants performed a song tribute to the legendary rock band Queen as well as a second song of their choice. Late, great Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is a notoriously hard act to follow and we couldn’t wait to see how the contestants approached their song tributes to the band on Wednesday night’s show.
The past few weeks on American Idol 2012, the voters have been wildly unpredictable and none of the remaining top 6 contestants were probably feeling very safe going into the performance show on Wednesday night.
WARNING: AMERICAN IDOL 2012 SPOILERS AHEAD!
Please be aware, this post contains American Idol spoilers for the top 6 performance night show on Wednesday. Please stop here if you do not want to know more about the episode!
Last week on the American Idol 2012 elimination results show, the voters unexpectedly sent home former favorite Colton Dixon, leaving him, the judges and his fans in shock. The week before that, virtually no one predicted Jessica Sanchez or Joshua Ledet would end up in the bottom two, and it was a total shock when heavy favorite for the finals Jessica Sanchez had to be saved from being eliminated by the judges.
Meanwhile, singers who have been predicted to be voted off American Idol 2012 repeatedly, including Elise Testone, Hollie Cavanagh and Skylar Laine continue to truck along with the support of their fan bases. So, pretty much, no one seems to be safe at this point on American Idol season 11. Everyone absolutely had to bring their A game this week to the American Idol 2012 stage. So who rocked the judges and the viewers on Queen night and who failed to stand out from the pack? Read on for our American Idol 2012 recap of the top 6 performances show to find out!
First on tap for the night is a video montage paying tribute to late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Original Queen band members Roger Taylor and Brian May hook up with the American Idol 2012 top 6 to give them advice and help with their songs chosen for the evening.
The remaining American Idol 2012 top 6 contestants take the stage with Roger Taylor and Brian May to perform a medley of Queen rock anthems, including “Another One Bites The Dust,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions.”
Now it’s time to move on to the first set of performances by the contestants, the Queen songs.
American Idol 2012 Top 6 performances – Song One
Jessica Sanchez – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Judges: Steven Tyler says Freddie Mercury would be proud of the performance although rock is not Jessica’s forte. Jennifer Lopez says Jessica sounded beautiful in the more singing parts of the song, but she needed more of an edge in the rocker parts. Randy Jackson says he loves it and Jessica is unbelievably talented.
Vote: 1-866-436-5701
Skylar Laine – “The Show Must Go On”
Judges: The judges think she killed it! Randy Jackson thinks it is one of Skylar’s best performances of the whole season. Jennifer Lopez says she has ‘goosies’ and Skylar articulated every part of the story; it was powerful and great. Steven Tyler says the performance was totally over the top, fabulous and shined.
Vote: 1-866-436-5702
Joshua Ledet – “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
Judges: Once again it is a standing ovation from the judges for Joshua Ledet. Randy Jackson says it was an unbelieveable performance in vocals, character and charisma and Joshua is like a young Wilson Picket. Steven Tyler says Joshua has classic style, sounds like nobody else and Freddie Mercury would have loved it. Jennifer Lopez says she loves everyone on Idol but Joshua is her favorite part of the show.
Vote: 1-866-436-5703
Elise Testone – “I Want It All”
Judges: The judges are totally in love! Randy Jackson says it has been a totally wow night so far and this was one of Elise’s best performances to date. Jennifer Lopez says the whole performance was in Elise’s element and she killed it. Steven Tyler says Elise sang the hell out of it with classic style.
Vote: 1-866-436-5704
Phillip Phillips – “Fat Bottomed Girls”
Judges: The judges are not giving Phillip’s twist on the song an overwhelmingly great response. Randy Jackson says he liked it but he didn’t really love it, it was just good for him. Jennifer Lopez says she loves Phillip’s flavor and he is a great singer and does not remind her of Dave Matthews. Steven Tyler says he loved watching Phillip sing and he is beautiful, great character and great song choice.
Vote: 1-866-436-5705
Hollie Cavanagh – “Save Me”
Judges: Steven Tyler says he thinks Hollie did a good job with the song and, well, that’s about it. Jennifer Lopez says she felt Hollie get more emotional in the middle of the song, but she was off pitch again a bit. She thinks Hollie is thinking too much and should try to have a good time. Randy Jackson says it was a good performance but she needed to have a moment and this wasn’t it.
Vote: 1-866-436-5706
American Idol 2012 Top 6 performances – Song Two
Jessica Sanchez “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross
Judges: Steven Tyler says he doesn’t think that Jessica can sing a song badly; she touches on Whitney Houston but she has her own thing going on. Jennifer Lopez says it was the best way she had ever heard that song and it was beautiful. Randy Jackson says he is just amazed with all the talent this year and Jessica is amazing because she is such a natural.
Vote: 1-866-436-5701
Skylar Laine – “Tattoos On This Town” by Jason Aldean
Judges: Randy Jackson says he is a huge fan and Skylar was effortless; another great performance and a wow on the big note at the end. Steven Tyler says Skylar didn’t take the song where she usually does and this one didn’t have as much flair, but it was good. Jennifer Lopez says Skylar looked comfortable and she killed it.
Vote: 1-866-436-5702
Joshua Ledet – “Ready for Love” by India.Arie
Judges: Steven Tyler says that when Joshua sings, he goes off into another place. He hopes the labels will get him some good songs. Jennifer Lopez says she doesn’t even know what to say, Joshua is transcendent and everyone is right with him when he sings. Randy Jackson also doesn’t know what to say, he’s speechless and Joshua is beyond his age; has so much talent.
Vote: 1-866-436-5703
Elise Testone – “Bold as Love” by Jimmi Hendrix
Judges: Steven Tyler says Elise touched his heart with the song but the song wasn’t well known enough even though he loved it. Jennifer Lopez says she knows what Steven is saying but she thinks Elise killed the song. Randy Jackson says he did not love it and it wasn’t the right song for this stage of the competittion; it was like she was boxing with the song.
Vote: 1-866-436-5704
Phillip Phillips – “The Stone” by The Dave Matthews Band
Judges: Steven Tyler says it was very entertaining and off the wall. He didn’t like the melody so much, but he did like the fiddle. Jennifer Lopez says it was a pretty song but thought it was too artsy and not the right choice for this stage of the competition. Randy Jackson says that he was worried but Phillip showed he is a true artist and he appreciates that sink or swim, Phillip will stay true to himself.
Vote: 1-866-436-5705
Hollie Cavanagh – “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
Judges: Hollie does well this time. Steven Tyler says Hollie sang the song beautifully and good for her. Jennifer Lopez says Hollie was perfect on the song, the emotion, the notes, the whole thing. Randy says this is the Hollie that everyone loves, this is the one and she is back.

Visit us again Thursday night here on GossipandGab.com for our American Idol 2012 elimination results show recap when we bring you the latest live as it happens!

My favourites are Elise and Phillip. I really like Elise’s voice. Wish she wouldn’t be so defensive when she gets criticism though.
I had a friend over last night that had never seen this year’s American idol, so there was no “favorites” or preconceived ideas about the Final 6. Many of us have chosen sides and will stick by our favorite until they receive the least amount of votes and are told “buh bye”: Here are the comments from a first time viewer with decent taste in music: (in order of appearance)
Jessica – Wow! what a voice. she is awsome.
Skylar – She’s good……OK…….sounds like Reba. Even moves like Reba
Elise – She is terrible…….her intonation hurts my ears. eewwuuu…..how did she make it this far?
Joshua – Wow, he is outstandinding. what a voice….amazing. A little too much screaming, but good.
Phillip – That was horrible…….he was terrible. I would never buy that. Boring…….He can’t sing on key.
Hollie – she’s cute. Nice voice Dorky outfit. (red satin pants suit)
LOL, love that rundown!
In last night’s episode my bottom 3s are skylar, phillip and hollie. I love jessica’s voice, very clean and she has her own style ….she needs to put more energy and should show more confidence in herself. Jessica i want you to know that you have the strong potentials of a future “american idol”, believe in yourself and show off girl. My song suggestions for you next time….”Lady Marmalade”, (so you can prove yourself) or “through the fire” which is very you. Put more energy, learn to dance more, listen to your mentors coz what they tell you is all for you…
…..I want to see you in the finale night jessica sanchez!!!
This season is starting to bore me. There isn’t anything special about any of the 6 contestants. Jessica puts me to sleep. Joshua hollers and wakes me up as I sleep in the pews. Phillip makes my stomach hurt with his off key singing and his twisted up facial expressions. Hollie who? Oh yeah, I forgot she was still here. Why is Elise still here? Last but not least Skylar sounds like every other country singer that has appeared on American Idol. Once the judges saved Jessica I was done. There are lots and lots of singers with descent voices. But don’t have what it takes to be a star. Jessica is one of them. If she wins she’ll be doing lounge concerts at some unknown bar by 20.
I feel that this is the best competition so far in many years. All the contestants are great in their own forte’s. Holly needs to really learn how to present her self on stage. Her voice is awesome but she lacks stage presence. I am not into Country music and personally there have been better country singers on AI then Skylar. She is very good but nothing unusual. Joshua is awesome and so is Jessica. I love Elise’s bluesy voice and feel she needs to stick with that raspy style for here on out. Joshua is incredible and Jessica wow for 16 she can belt it out and should stick with R&B style of singing and she could do jazz too. Jessica will only improve on her style which some day she will be a superstar. Phillip is okay. I mean he is a one trick pony with his voice. I feel he will do good out on his own doing his own thing but not an AI winner. I think it will be down to Joshua and Skylar. The only reason I think Skylor is due to so many people are into country music even though she is not the best. The best thing to do is when they sing close your eyes don’t look at them and feel if it is believable and captures the song the way it should and listen for the melodies and tones.
I absolutely LOVED Jessica singing Queen! I think she totally gave it her all and i disagreed with the judges who said it wasn’t her best and rock isn’t her forte—maybe it’s not her forte- but for me, this performance was stellar- ..i was blown AWAY! She totally brought it on!
Please dont always compare jessica and joshua :$ ! Joshua is the best singer !he got feeling when he sing ~ if H.A.T.E.R ! JUST SHT THE F Up !
I was amazed of Jessica’s performance tonight especially when she sang the Rock song. she really has the voice in her own version. She is really improving. Go Jessica and dont let America and Philippines feel bored as what others said. But for me, you’re not boring, just misunderstood by people who dont know the real essence of music. Go Go Go!
what about it…straight shouting!!!!!!!!!! waaahhhh aaaa waaaahj gwaaaaaah aaaahhhhh! graaahhhh aaaahhhh aaaah aaaa! you like that…and u like that! goodd luck! u want to look like sick!????? shout it out!!!! feel awww? u singiing??? passion and melody…that’s singing….!
i mean yes, joshua is unbelievable compared to jessica being believable. so there…..
the most abused word in ai? unbelievable..it’s becoming so unbelievable especially when randy uses it to describe a performance of joshua. really, it is not so.
I love rock music and this is the only season I’ve been religiously watching this AI season. During the early part of the season, Philip Philipp is the guy i’m routng at. Damn, he’s style is boringly the same as each idol week comes. And the latest, he’s off-notes are tremendously increasing.
I was surprised on how Jessica rendered the Queen classic. She may not be a legit rocker, but look how she delivered it? Not bad at all, i repeatedly uttered, while she was hitting Bohemian Rhapsody on the wall. I did enjoyed her version. I just found myself craving for more Jessica performance from youtube,
She’s gonna make it. If not in AI, im sure on the charts……
Hollie, Joshua, Philip, Elise should be sent home . Skylar and Jessica should be to the finale .
@nicole…how can you say that colton has no style and passion?duh, are you blind?sure he doesn’t have that power vocal but he moved many people when he sings..maybe you just don’t know him that much..anyways,for the remaining contestants i go for phil and elise..yeah,i like ‘em rock ‘n roll..the rest are just snoozefest
Simon Cowell liked Fantasia. But Randy loved her. She’s flopped in almost everything she’s done, with her screeching voice and “yeah yeah yeah’s”.
Simon said Jennifer Hudson woyld never be anything more than what she was on Idol. He was a fool.
Oscar, Golden Globe, Grammies. More movies, CD’s and a spokesperson for Weight Watchers.
Simon Cowell would probably sign Jessica in a heartbeat. She’s the best. No one cares if she bores anyone. If she does, you must be easily bored. Or tone deaf.
Holly and Jessica have the best voices——but all six are very talented. I’d vote to send that airhead female judge home if I had to pick only one person to send home.
Sheila, Phillip Phillips sings off key, imitates Dave Matthews. The little girls like him so they vote for him. He is the least talented of those left. He also sings affected like Joshua, both his vocals and facial expressions. Tonight he made a stupid face while he sang an off key note like he was a comic strip character. Really affected and lame as can be. So karaoke.
Since when have ANY of the last “cute guys” with average talent that were American Idol winners, had a hit CD? I know what I’m saying, Phillips will do nothing.
This is my opinion of the AI tonight:
Jessica – the first song is really not her forte, the judges are right in sayng that she missed the rocker part. However, that is who she is, she is not a rocker, and creating a ballad from a rock song is not bad at all because she sounded beautifully. We also don’t know how she was mentored on the song, maybe they eliminated the rock part to be a Jessica-type of song. The second song is awesome, it creates goosies. I am just worried about her being the same flavor every week. Nice vocals, BBChez.
Skylar – I don’t know but the first song is pitchy for me especially n the low notes and I believe the judges was astounded by the shouting (again) that she did. Maybe I am hearing it wrong but I disagree with the judges. The 2nd song is good for me as it is a country song. She did it effortlessly.
Joshua – He did both songs with justice but it still don’t deserve standing O because there is nothing different from the previous performance. It also seems that he is always catching his breath everytime he sings, Is that a strategy or he is having problem with his breathing? The result of the breathing problem is not good for me.
Elise – her vocal is not good to me but she nailed the first song. That was awesome. The second song is not easy to sing but I believe she did it. There is not enough power into it because of her problem in vocals.
Philip – The only good thing about Philip is him being handsome and no more. I don’t know what the judges can see on him because they always have good comments on him every week. He has the worst vocals among the contestants, stubborn and he has the same flavor every week. Same tune, same position on the stage and same arrangment of the song.
Hollie – There is something is Hollie’s voice that I admire. It is husky yet so powerful. If she uses it very with correct song choices, she has a chance to win AI. But all along, I always agree with the judges when they say that she is pitchy especially for the past weeks and too technical. But if she continues to sing like the way she sang the second song, she will stay until longer in the contest.
For me, the weakest performance is Philip and Elise, either one of them will go home tomorow. But I do hope it will be Philip.
@nicole…..I beg to disagree with you on Jessica. Actually I admire that she has a maturity of style. You make it sound like her youth is a liability instead of should be an asset, since she could sing mature songs with emotions despite her age. I hope the rest of America will not be as bias as you are in voting for the deserving idol.
I love Hollie’s singing. I especially loved when she sang Adele’s song. The judges should have given her a standing o for that song. I think the judges have been way too hard on her. However, they did give her a standing o tonight, which she totally deserved. I felt so much better for her. I don’t want her to leave. I feel they have their pets..Joshua…I don’t know why…I agree he is a screamer. Phillip can also leave anytime….he just has no class at all. I am from Canada…and my friends in the USA are
voting for “Hollie”.
Joshua is not over-rated. People who don’t understand where he comes from, and how the true church sounds would think that. How can you not like Joshua? He’s a humble guy with an awesome talent. Everyone else on the show however are over-rated. They don’t have the charisma or the passion that he has. Especially people like Elise Testone. She’s too old fashioned in her retro seventies style, and yes the seventies can be old fashioned too. She’s arrogant, distant, and almost seems to expect them to say good things about her. Are maybe that’s an air of desperation that just turns people off.
Skylar, really! Is it ok for people to sound bad if they’re sing country music. That’s not right. Sorry, but there’s one over-rated person. Joshua screams, oh please. She screams just as much.
However, I like her, because she’s passionate too, and it’s easy to see that music is something that’s a part of her life. She does a good job even though to me doesn’t really sound very pleasing. I’m not going to make any comments about Holli. I think she should probably go home, because she tries hard, but she’s one of those people who just sings for the sake of singing.
I’m so glad Colton Dixon is gone. The kid just looked like ever pretender I’ve ever seen. As opposed to some of the rock kids who live only for music. The kid had no style and no vocal power. There was nothing beautiful or interesting about his voice. They never stood up for him becaue he didn’t have any passion either. It was like the kid was just trying to impress someone.
Phillip has mad passion, but for those of you he thinks Joshua screams, what the hell does he do! He sings every song the exact same way, and sometimes sounds like he’s trying to control a Tourette tick. However like Skylar, you can feel the music when he sings, and that’s a good thing.
Jessica, Jessica, Jessica. there is over-rated at it’s best. She is the reason why we need Simon Cowell back. Someone needs to tell this girl that she is 17 and not 35. She sounds nice always, but bores me to tears. That a superstar does not make, or maybe she can be like Celine Dion, but who listens to that crap anymore. Someone seriously needs to hit this girl with a bucket of ice cold water. She has no personality, and no real connection to te music she’s singing. I love Luther Vandross, but his music has no business being sung from a seventeen year old’s mouth. Now, if she goes home. I will be saying ha!
Oh, and if Simon Cowell loved Fantasia, then he’d love Joshua too, and just like he told Jordin Sparks to act her age, he would do the same for Jessica. I also think he would hate Phillip! He probably, like me, would’ve stop commenting on Holli a long time ago.
I say stop hating on Josh, and talk about the true people who are overated! Like Elise, girls need some style advice and style in her music. Her face just bothers me.
If I missed anyone, it’s because they are just that boring. The music world needs, Phillip, Joshua, and Skylar. True music soul, another true gospel singer, and true country. Everyone else, been there done that, or don’t want to go there.
I just had to get that out! Whew! I’m so glad Colton Dixon is gone. Couldn’t take anymore of his cock eyed glances at the camera.
Skylar and Phillip are the only ones who seem like they have a backbone on the show to me.
Oh and what’s up with the term “Wheel house” Damnit! could someone get Randy Jackson a dictionary. I swear the man gets a phrase and runs with it. And really, since when was he the originator of the word “dawg”. When American Idol started however many years ago, “dawg” was an antiquated urban term, yet then and some even now act like we’ve never heard it before. Really, come on!!!
These judges should be replaced..I miss Simon who say it as it is.
to sheila from Canada. Have you read some of these other posts? I am certainly not the only one who has a criticism about the idols, whether you see it or not. Even Sweet Potato doesn’t like Skylar so why don’t you pick on her for awhile. And again, you don’t know me, so if you don’t like what I have to say, you certainly don’t have to read it. And how dare you call me a hater, for your information I hate no one. and made one comment about one idol. I don’t think that qualifies for putting someone down. Anyway, I am signing off of this website so I won’t see any further posts from you. Do me a favor and stop the name calling, It’s not very lady like.
PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phillip and Skyler
Elise was great tonight! I agree with Steven and JLo on her 2nd song. Randy was WAY off base,,,Maybe because he already revealed his picks for the final four? TYPICAL!
