VIDEO: Smash Preview – Katharine McPhee ‘Touch Me’

I must make a guilty confession… I’m a fan of Smash! Yes, my secret, inner, musical theater diva can’t help but love this snarky, desperation-filled take on the drama behind the scenes of Broadway. So even though until now, I’ve really actually rather detested American Idol alumni Katharine McPhee, I just can’t keep myself from enjoying Smash like a nasty, greasy, weekly cheeseburger of fun.

One of the things that always bothered me about Katharine McPhee on American Idol was her air of superiority, which clashed with her blank stare, weight obsession and overall blandness. Her character on Smash actually shares some of the same belief in her own superiority, although her Karen character is an infant compared to the experienced Broadway talent she is up against. This does continue to irritate me somewhat.

Still, I have to admit, Katharine McPhee has grown by leaps and bounds since her American Idol days. I’m actually starting to like her, even though it kind of makes me shudder.

After watching this Smash preview video of next week’s episode “The Coup”, I find myself even more regretfully enjoying watching Katharine McPhee perform! Damnit! Oh well, never it let it be said that I’m not willing to change my mind when someone proves that maybe I was wrong about them.

Go ahead, watch this sexy, theatrical, evocative performance of “Touch Me” (by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder) and see if you agree that Katharine McPhee has evolved into a performer finally worth her screen time.

What did you think about Katharine McPhee’s “Touch Me” rendition? Was it a Smashing success? Or too over the top?

Comments

  1. Katharine has always been worth her screen time. She’s just doing something really different from the way a lot of people think of her, plus the contrast to how the character of Karen has been shown for 6 weeks. I dare anybody to go back and watch Idol performances of I Have Nothing and It’s All Coming Back To Me Now and tell me you didn’t see any hint that she could grab an audience like this.
