Fear the Walking Dead has really elevated itself over the original series. Killing of one of its strongest characters has really helped the series find its voice and has also used the unique landscape it its advantage. “Burning in Water Drowning in Flame” shows the contentious pair of Daniel and Strand on their way back to hotel. This felt a bit odd considering their trip was based on Strand’s lie about Ofelia.
Early into the episode, Ofelia’s whereabouts was at the heart of the story. Fortunately, they didn’t spend too much of the show searching for her whereabouts. Now the question remains as to whether Ofelia was with the people who shot the helicopter down and killed Travis? We know that she was in the area based on what we last saw of her. Though she didn’t step out in the open tonight, she could well still be an important part of Walker’s crew.
What we do see is a good old fashioned land battle. Since there are no more borders, walkers in the form of Native Americans were fighting for their land. This worked well as everything is regressing back to the past era. However, this also puts Broke Jaw Ranch in a mess as Jeremiah no longer has the benefit of America’s Law by his side.
Most important part of this week’s show revolved around Madison’s eagerness to prove herself and find out who killed Travis. She uses her past experience dealing with troubles youth to control Troy, which makes him respect and despise her at the same time.
Back at Broke Jaw, Alicia has really taken a liking to Jake and ends up sleeping with him. Nick spends some time with Jeremiah, trying to understand him and his camp.
Five episodes into the new season, the show is starting to feel a lot more capable and confident. Their journey feels very real and un-forced. Madison’s survival mode, Nick’s desire to make Luciana feel comfortable and Alicia’s resentment for any future seems lost.
