The Season 3 finale of Better Call Saul ended with a bang, or should I say blaze. In this episode we see several characters make some decisions that have life changing affects. The finale, titled “Lantern”, was a satisfying end to a terrific season which ends with a broken down Chuck intentionally knocking over a lantern and starting a fire that immediately engulfs the room.
Chuck’s demise began when Howard gave in to him and agreed to buy him out, even though this is not what he really wanted. You see the pain on his face as he walked out of the company that he spent his life building. While at home licking his wounds, Jimmy comes to visit and makes an effort to mend their relationship. However the hurt Chuck takes his anger out on Jimmy and tells him that he doesn’t really matter to him. From there we watch Chuck regress in down to the point that he tears his house apart before seemingly committing suicide.
Nacho was forced to speed up his plan to get rid of Hector when he insinuates that Nacho’s father was a problem. As he approaches the don, ready to shoot him, others show up for a meeting with Gus Fring. At the meeting Hector loses his temper and suffers a heart attack, fulfilling Nacho’s original plan. As they wait for an ambulance, Nacho switch’s Hector’s heart pills, but not without Gus noticing.
Kim’s accident takes a heavy toll on Jimmy and he tries to turn back from the road he started on this season. After try to make things right with Chuck, he vindicates himself with the senior citizens, in though that meant outing himself for the con artist he his. His relationship with Kim seemed to be getting better after a facing some difficulties in previous episodes. However, Chuck’s actions could be just what he needs to take that final step to becoming Saul Goodman.
This show just keeps getting better with every season. I am very curious to see how the consequences of this episode’s actions will play out in the next season.
