Zelena got her happy ending at the end of season 6 as Once Upon a Time heads into a rebooted season 7.
Season 3B brought a little something wicked to the cast and little did they know she would instantly become a fan favorite. Later, returning as a series regular for two more seasons. Rebecca Mader debuted as Zelena and magic happened. A spark ignited when she swooped in on her broom stick. Who would have thought the Wicked Witch of the West would be such a delight to watch? Mader’s charisma brought something special to this character and you couldn’t help but fall in love. There was no denying that the reception she received turned her half season arc into a series regular position a couple seasons later.
She started off completed demented ready to ring her sisters neck for existing. A notion not unknown to any older sibling who has seen a younger one get everything the easy way. But by the time the curtain closed on season 6, Zelena was fully reformed. After all the horrid things she had done, she had the sister she always needed in her life, a family that she always wanted, and was categorized a hero. There have been plenty of moments that have stuck out over the years of Mader playing Zelena, narrowing them down to five was rather difficult. In no particular order, and in no way the only few, here are five of Zelena’s best moments on Once Upon a Time.
“The Queen may be evil, but I’m wicked, and wicked always wins.”
Her signature saying got the ball rolling in this battle between the sisters. Evil vs. Wicked the theme of 3B put these sisters at opposite ends of the battle field ready for a blood bath. Not understanding why their mother abandoned her, keeping them strangers, Zelena was green with envy over her sister’s riches. Regina on the other hand thought Zelena had the better hand, Cora wasn’t the greatest mother. These two were at each other’s throats. She did horrible things. But she made it look good.
5×19 “Sisters” gave that reunion between Mother and Daughter that everyone had been waiting years to see. With Cora’s return in season 5 and Bex having been upped to series regular, the question loomed will mom and daughter get to meet? It took a while before Zelena popped back into the Underworld but the reunion was everything and then some.
We got more back story and learned that Cora was really a terrible mother to her girls who actually loved each other at one point. Seeing them about to blow each other’s heads off was the straw that broke the camels back and she made up for it. Giving them back their memories and a chance of having the sisterly bond that they deserve.
Having her sister by her side, Zelena had to let her mom go far too soon. The scene where they’re sending her off is gut wrenching to watch but the bond that blossomed between the sisters is heart warming. Yes, Zelena did some terrible things but she is the only blood relative Regina still has alive (not including the child she had with her sister’s true love while pretending to be his dead ex-wife).
Zelena kills Hades to save Regina
Zelena’s boo thang turned out to be a total jerk who tried to kill her sister. Robin stepped in to save the love of his life… Hades dude this is what love looks like not whatever you’re smoking. But then the power rested in Zelena’s hands. She had two options, kill her sister and rule the world with the Lord of the Underworld OR kill her soulmate and save whatever bond she had left with her sister. She went with the later, because at the end of the day blood is stronger than water for these two. They’ve had their ups and downs but they have come out of it stronger. Zelena and Regina both lost their loves that day. Robin lost her father. The women in this family never do get it easy, do they?
Giving up her powers to save the town
As the final battle started to loom near, Zelena got tricked into setting a bunch of fairy crystals dark. This eventually led to her brawl with her sister yet again at how she doesn’t listen, etc. Eventually though, Zelena came through with an idea that was pure genius. The crystals were tied to her magic so if she didn’t have any they wouldn’t work. She gave up the one thing that made her, her, for the better of everyone. This moment was Zelena’s spotlight. She became a hero in this moment. The family that Regina had surrounded herself with had finally fully opened up to her. She got her sister back, she moved in with her sister. They found that relationship that they’d both been longing for.
Wicked Always Wins
The much anticipated musical episode gave our favorite Wicked Witch a wicked solo that was beautifully demented just like she is. “Wicked Always Wins” brought together a beautiful melody with lyrics that made you sound like a crazy person. But the mix was absolutely perfect for Zelena. In her wicked days she wanted nothing more than to see her sister suffer. The contrast to present day where they were happy and loved each other, showed how far these two have come.
This song was easily one of the best from the episode, it helps that Mader has one hell of a voice and killed it.
Zelena was one of the best additions to this show. Her spunky attitude and relationship with her sister was one to look forward to. It’s hard to fathom that she won’t be gracing our screens next season. She did get her happy ending though, so that does make it a degree easier knowing that she’s wickedly happy wherever she is with baby Robin.
Rebecca, you brought this character to life and gave her that edge that set her apart. There’s no doubt that your natural charisma is the reason this character became the woman she was. We’re going to miss her. More than ever. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Zelena and we get a glimpse into what she’s been up to during the time jump. Either way, we wish you the best of luck and know you’re going to kill it where you go. Shondaland for example, hint hint Shonda Rhimes, she’s amazing and will rock whatever you throw her into.
