The Top 40 home cooks have been brought to the MasterChef 2017 kitchen! They will cook for the judges tonight, so let’s get this started!
This is a battle of the pastors, as we have Shawn taking on Yachecia! For Yachecia, she calls her cooking sassy Southern fusion and it has to make her sing and dance. Shawn has traveled the country being a pastor, so he likes to cook global comfort food. For their battle, they will have to breakdown a whole chicken and then make an amazing batch of fried chicken!
TASTING – For Yachecia, Gordon said it is beautiful. Good color and crispiness is perfect. Her chicken has love. Aaron said that is juicy chicken and it was a pleasant bite. For Shawn, the thigh is cooked beautifully. It does not look that attractive, but he definitely nailed the fried chicken. Christina said it is tasty and messy, which is what fried chicken should be.
The winner of this battle is Yachecia, as she gets the white apron on MasterChef 2017!
For this battle, it is Jason taking on Ty and it is a battle of the scallop! Jason grew up in am Asian-American household, so they used every ingredient in the house for a meal. They would have seven dishes on the table! Ty is a model and wants to show America he is more than just a pretty face. Jason is making a trio of flavors for the scallops, since that is how he grew up. This seems to worry the judges. Ty is making it more simple.
TASTING – For Jason, Gordon asked why so much on one plate? The flavor of the last scallop is mind-blowing. he has given him a lot to think about. Aaron said the last one is textbook and the other two were not needed. For Ty, Gordon said they are cooked beautifully. There is a lot of heat in that sauce. Salad is overdressed. He wants to see more from him. Christina wonders if he played it too safe tonight on MasterChef Season 8!
The judges discuss and the white apron goes to Jason!
We check out a quicklook at some of the home cooks, as the judges are giving out pointers on how to do certain techniques. Christina said the key to being a MasterChef is not only how they cook, but how they learn. Four aprons were handed out here!
This is a four-way battle, as we have Julia, Adam, Gabriel and David all battling it out for two white aprons. I was thinking this would be a battle of the youngings, as we had a 19, 21 and 22 year old. However, David comes in and he is 50! They will be making tacos for this one! Adam said he goes to Harvard, so he is one of the best learners in this country. David is bringing a Caribbean vibe to his tacos. Christina is worried about Julia getting a good crust in the short amount of time. Gordon is worried about Gabriel only being 19.
TASTING – For Adam, Aaron said it is breaking up on him, which is a disappointment. For David, Christina said the fish is crispy and well-seasoned. He struggled with the tortillas. She wanted a little bit more in the bold flavors. For Julia, Gordon said the tortilla is not done. The potential is there, but that is not a showstopper. For Gabriel, Aaron said it looks phenomenal. It is cool and refreshing and he is only 19.
Aaron said that one home cook stood out among them and was far better, as the first apron goes to Gabriel and he makes me cry! The other white apron goes to Adam!
This is a battle of the duck for Paola and Reba. Paola is a dentist by day and he is ready to turn that white coat into a white apron tonight on MasterChef 2017! Reba said she grew up poor in Texas, so when they wanted to eat chicken, they would go out and kill it! She said her food is slap your momma good. They are completely opposite kind of cooks and Christina said it will show in the dishes.
TASTING – For Paola, Christina said at face value, it is a great dish. She cuts it and said it is pretty beautiful. The duck is juicy and the sauce is beautiful. Gordon said duck could have been a few more minutes. The plate looks stunning, but it does not taste as good as it looks. For Reba, Gordon said she ruined the beautiful color of that duck with the sauce. The duck tastes incredible. It tastes great, but looks a mess. Aaron said the duck is fantastic and the gravy is wonderful.
Gordon said they are both so good and both deserve to go through. However, only one apron can be handed out and the apron goes to Reba! I am liking her, so keep it going girl!
