It looks like American Idol is coming back from the dead, as ABC had officially confirmed those rumors that have been going around for months now! Yes, an American Idol revival is happening and happening next television season! Get the American Idol ABC details below!
There was a bidding war to bring American Idol back, as NBC was thought to be the frontrunner a couple months ago. FOX was also in the running, the original home of Idol. However, ABC swooped in and stole it away from both of them!
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said: “American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.”
Left the air too soon? A little dig at FOX while announcing they are bringing it back?
The last episode of American Idol aired back in April 2016. At the time, FOX ended the program after 15 seasons because of sagging ratings and higher production costs. They made changes along the way, like going from two nights a week to just one. Nothing seemed to help them.
Now ABC thinks they can reignite the fan base? I mean, it’s been a year and most people thought American Idol should have been cancelled years before that! I think this may be a big bust for ABC and some smack talking that will come back to haunt Dungey!
However, they have big hopes for the revival. Disney co-chairman Ben Sherwood said: “‘Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC’s lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol.”
No host or judges have been signed for the American Idol revival. Nor has an exact premiere date been announced, as they would have to start the audition process for the contestants first!
