A fun movie-inspired opening number featuring the stars and pros kicks off tonight’s show, Night at the Movies. The couple with the highest score will be safe from tonight’s elimination. In the first round, the couples will try to evoke a feeling from a specific genre, and in the second round, the couples will face off against one another for additional points. Choreographer Mandy Moore is a guest judge, and tonight is also a double elimination. Let’s get started!
Bonner Bolton & Sharna Burgess – Paso Doblé (Western)
Judges: Len congratulates all of them for making it to week 7. He said he got wrapped up in the cowboy. He came out with all guns blazing firing from the hip. Mandy said she didn’t lose him in that performance. He held his own and it was an incredible way to start. He continues to grow week after week. Bruno said he needs a bit more smoothness in the joints. Carrie Ann said he got a little bit lost in the number, but he has this elegance that goes with him in every single dance.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 7, Len – 7, Mandy – 8, Bruno – 7 = 29/40
Nancy Kerrigan & Artem Chigvintsev – Tango (Romance)
Judges: Mandy said she looks absolutely beautiful. Well done with telling a story with the choreography. Her footwork was impeccable. Bruno said what a grand entrance from a grand lady. A five-star deluxe version of a tango. Her lines are much better. Carrie Ann said she seems so much more relaxed and it shows in her performance. She’s blossomed the most but she sometimes loses track of her arms. Len said the quantity of steps and quality of movement were there.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, Mandy – 9, Bruno – 9 = 36/40
Simone Biles & Sasha Farber – Charleston (Silent Movie)
Judges: Bruno said it had the sparkle of a 1920s flapper. It had energy and goofy fun. Very entertaining. Carrie Ann said that was a challenging routine. There are a lot of nuances and expressions. She makes everything look so effortless and easy. It’s a joy to watch her. Len said she puts the moves in movies. Great characterization. Lot of fun. It was great. Mandy said she’s an incredible performer but she’d love for her to enjoy these moments. Look in Sasha’s eyes and connect.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 9, Mandy – 9, Bruno – 9 = 37/40
We take a break in the competition to see a performance from the stars of Disney’s upcoming movie, Descendants 2. Now, let’s get back to it.
Nick Viall & Peta Murgatroyd – Argentine Tango (Action)
Judges: Carrie Ann said that was very hot. He has moments of extreme brilliance. He sometimes gets ahead of himself, but he loves their connection. Len said he likes the way he’s improved from week one. It had plenty of attack and aggression. He came out and he sold it. Mandy said she loves the storytelling. For the first time she stopped watching him and started watching the dancer. Bruno said it was his most mature focus to date. He squeezed everything out of the character.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 8, Len – 8, Mandy – 9, Bruno – 9 = 34/40
Rashad Jennings & Emma Slater – Paso Doblé (Horror)
Judges: Len said thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening. The music was epic and so was the dancing. Another solid performance. Mandy said week one he hadn’t figured out to let the dance be in his body and perform for them, and he has figured that out now. Bruno said it was rich, lush, full of passion and feeling. He played it in a grand operatic way. Sometimes he throws his hands away and by doing so his lines don’t continue. Carrie Ann said the storytelling in his body was incredible. He has the potential to win this, but he has to watch his posture because it’s the missing link.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 9, Len – 9, Mandy – 10, Bruno – 9 = 37/40
David Ross & Lindsay Arnold – Salsa (Sci-fi)
Judges: Mandy said she felt he was a little flat in his feet. He needs to find more action in his footwork because everything else he’s a joy. Bruno said he’s cool at hip hop but he needs to get the hips going and feet placed on the floor. Carrie Ann said it wasn’t the smoothest salsa but he comes out and entertains them. He executed it with no mistakes. Len said it was fun. There were touches of salsa. He loves watching him.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 8, Len – 8, Mandy – 8, Bruno – 8 = 32/40
Normani Kordei & Val Chmerkovskiy – Argentine Tango (Foreign Film)
Judges: Bruno said the Academy Award for best dance for Movie Night goes to Normani & Val. That was a classic dance that makes this show so special. Carrie Ann said she deserves immunity for that dance. She’s not only strong and fierce but elegant as well. It’s an honor to watch her dance. Len said there was staccato and a softness. Mandy said what she was most impressed by was her leg action. She’s gotten so strong in her legs. Technically she’s grown a lot.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 10, Mandy – 10, Bruno – 10 = 40/40! (Perfect! Well deserved!)
With a perfect score, Normani & Val have earned immunity from tonight’s elimination. The remaining 6 couples will now compete in round 2 in the dance-off round. The winners from each dance-off will add 2 points to their score. Here we go!
Simone & Sasha vs. Nancy & Artem – Cha Cha
Judges: Len said he didn’t want these two against each other because they’re both terrific dancers. One had a slightly sharper leg action throughout. Mandy said this is a massively difficult task. They were both very good, but one was sharper. Bruno said these were two completely different styles. One was more hard-edged and one was more fluid and feminine. Carrie Ann said one was classic and one was modern. This was a tough decision.
Scores: Carrie Ann – Simone & Sasha, Len – Simone & Sasha, Mandy – Simone & Sasha, Bruno – Simone & Sasha, America – Simone & Sasha (63%)
A unanimous win for Simone & Sasha!
Rashad & Emma vs. David & Lindsay – Jive
Judges: Mandy said they both brought a lot to it. Bruno said they gave him plenty of joy. They were having fun and going for it. Carrie Ann said it was incredible. Len said he admires them so much.
Scores: Carrie Ann – Rashad & Emma, Len – Rashad & Emma, Mandy – Rashad & Emma, Bruno – Rashad & Emma, America – Rashad & Emma (54%)
A unanimous win for Rashad & Emma!
Bonner & Sharna vs. Nick & Peta – Rumba
Judges: Bruno said they both peaked in this dance at the right time. They gave everything they had. One had slightly more freedom of movement. Whatever happens, they should be proud. Carrie Ann said they were both in the zone and fully connected with their partners. Len said they both danced terrific. Neither of them lost the musicality of the dance. He salutes them. Mandy said she was feeling some heartstrings being tugged.
Scores: Carrie Ann – Bonner & Sharna, Len – Bonner & Sharna, Mandy – Bonner & Sharna, Bruno – Nick & Peta, America – Bonner & Sharna (62%)
