Connie gets back from her trip to find the temp, Marcy, still sitting at her desk. Boden tells her that he is going to be keeping her around for a while to make light workloads. Meanwhile, Severide is trying to call Anna, but she isn’t answering his calls.
Squad gets a call about a car that has crashed into a pillar in the front of a building. They find a problem when the realize it’s an electric car and everything in the area is live. They are able to kill the main power to the car and get the driver out and to the hospital. Squad 3 has a problem with their truck, the transmission died. While they wait for a rig to come get the truck, Severide goes into Med to see if he can find Anna, but she took leave.
While Squad is out, they have a squad truck from House 6 coming over to help out. House 51 get a call about a man down in a building. When they get there, they find a guy in a tub full of concrete. They find out that the man in the tub, Marvin, is being evicted and he did this because he promised someone he would stay there. He is suffering from Crush Syndrome and they need to move fast, but Marvin isn’t cooperating. Otis walks in with the light on his helmet on and that seems to calm Marvin down. They all put their lights on and cut him free.
Severide and Squad 3 get back to the house and Squad 6 is leaving. Severide is introduced to one of the guys on Squad 6, but he is too focused on Anna leaving. Kidd tries to tell him that there is no reason she would just up and leave him and her career. Back at their retraining course, Brett and Dawson are taking their tests, but Brett doesn’t finish hers in time.
Severide goes over to Anna’s house and her father answers the door. Severide put two and two together and realized the only thing that would make her want to leave him and her job is the cancer. He finds out from her that the cancer is back and it’s in her bones, it’s everywhere. They are talking management, not treatment and that’s when she tells him that she can’t do this with him and shuts the door. He didn’t even get to say anything to her.
After Severide gets back to the firehouse, Anna’s father shows up to talk to Severide. He tells him that Anna has been so strong during this, but even though she is strong, she isn’t right. He tells Severide that whether Anna realizes it or not, she needs Severide to be there and asks him not to give up on her. Also tells him that she was the best when she was with him, Severide gave her something to fight for.
Dawson and Brett get their test results back and find that they both have passed their tests and can return to work. Boden tells everyone to get to the shops, but on their way a call comes over the radio. They are only a couple blocks away so they stop to assist Squad 6. When they get there, they find that Squad 6 climbed down a manhole and seconds later, there is an explosion inside. Casey goes in to help Squad 6 get out of the sewer tunnels.
Inside the tunnels, Casey hears someone call out for help. It’s his friend Kanel who he reunited with when Squad 6 came by 51 to cover for Squad 3. He is dragging another firefighter and hands him off to Casey to bring him back and then runs back in. The gas levels that Kidd is monitoring are getting higher and it’s getting more dangerous for Casey and Kanel to be in there.\ Casey is able to talk him into getting out until they can ventilate.
They ventilate and then head back in to get the other firefighter and the worker they were there to rescue in the first place. They had three dead and one in critical condition and Kanel is the only one that walked away. He is clearly upset and Casey goes to talk to him, but Boden stops him to talk about what happened. After, they all head to the hospital and Kanel looks really upset because the one who is in critical condition, saved his life.
Casey later finds Kanel in the chapel and Kanel tells Casey that he deliberately broke protocol. It’s his fault they are dead. He wasn’t watching the gas readings. Casey calls Boden to the scene of the explosion and it doesn’t make sense to him. He asks Boden to walk him through Kanel’s statement. After talking it through, the statement doesn’t really match up to Boden either.
Meanwhile, Severide goes back to the pediatric ward to ask one of the nurses for a favor, he has an idea. Severide goes to see Anna again and her father lets him in. He brings a picture from Becca, one of Anna’s patients at the hospital. He tells her that no matter what, she is loved and she has people. She breaks down and tells him that she is scared and he hugs her and tells her that he is too.
We end the episode off with a fund raiser at Molly’s for the fallen firefighter’s families. Severide brings Anna to the medical center to have some tests run and she tells him that her odds aren’t good. He tells her that he isn’t thinking about odds, he is sticking to what he knows. He knows that he is there and so is she.
Casey gets news from Boden that the firefighter that was in critical condition has a long road ahead, but he is going to make a full recovery. Casey goes to tell Kanel the news. He also talks to him about the things that don’t make sense about his statement. He tells Casey what he thinks happened. Casey thinks that he is covering for one of the fallen, to protect his legacy. Kanel tells him to let it rest and when Casey pushes it, Kanel gets angry and walks away.
