Angus MacGyver investigates the death of his close friend from M.I.T. In MacGyver season 1 episode 19. For a refresher on what happened last time, read my recap of episode 18.
MacGyver season 1 episode 19 opens with MacGyver and Jack Dalton stuck in a trash compactor. So, he uses his Swiss Army knife to poke a hole in the compactor wall and stop it, but not before Dalton is hurt.
Matty Webber talks to MacGyver now that Dalton is injured. And, MacGyver says it was his fault because he used a technical term that Dalton didn’t know. So, she tells him, “Maybe you need a partner that can speak your language.” Then, MacGyver gets a call.
Afterwards, he tells Wilt Bozer that his friend Frankie from M.I.T. Is dead. Matty gives him permission to leave work to go to the memorial in Boston.
At the memorial, MacGyver greets Smitty, the man who told him about Frankie. He tells MacGyver that this is the second recent death of a person working at M.I.T. Frankie’s faculty advisor died in a car crash just before she died in a fire.
MacGyver and Dalton go to the Frankie’s burnt down lab. MacGyver recognizes it as a bomb site. He locates detonator that the investigators overlooked.
MacGyver calls Matty to tell her that he knows Frankie’s death wasn’t an accident. Matty tells him that he can stay, but she needs him back in 48 hours for another assignment.
Dalton and MacGyver trace the emails of a man who was taking photos at her funeral. They find Frankie alive.
Frankie shows them a secret underground place she’s living. She explains she sent the photographer to the funeral because she was hoping her killer would show up.
Then, she explains that her work put her on the trail of identifying a killer from a cold case, which she believes is the reason her advisor was killed and her lab was blown up.
MacGyver and Frankie work in a lab to identify the killer using a DNA sample, but Dalton spots a group of people who could be coming to kill Frankie. They decide to leave before they can test the DNA.
They hide in one room of the laboratory. Frankie suggests that if they want the DNA sample, maybe they should give it to them and see if they’ll go away. But, Dalton is sure the men will kill her.
Using Frankie’s system for identifying people’s entire DNA sequence, the team is able to get all of the genetic information about the killer. Wilt Bozer uses the info to construct a model of what the killer looks like and they realize that it’s Richard Sang, the man who funded Frankie’s research.
The team watches as Sang dedicates a building at M.I.T. Riley Davis finds out the murder victim was a journalist who was about to expose Sang for fraud. Dalton punches Sang, giving them a blood sample that they’re able to match to the killer’s.
At the end of the episode, Dalton tells MacGyver that he was very comfortable hanging out with Frankie and wonders if he’d be happier around people who are more like him. MacGyver assures him that he doesn’t want to work in a lab at M.I.T., he wants to work with Dalton.
