Tonight’s episode of Chicago Justice season 1 started off with a bunch of guys having a couple drinks at a bar before going to pick up their friend Trevor for a hunting trip. Trevor’s father was one of the guys going on this trip and when they go to pick Trevor up, he doesn’t answer his door. Trevor’s father opens the front door and goes in calling for his son, but there is no response and that’s when he finds his son’s body on the floor in the other room.
In his pocket, they find a pair of red women’s underwear and when they speak to his fiance, they didn’t belong to her. After talking to his friend who were going on the hunting trip, the team find out that night before was Trevor’s bachelor party, he was set to get married the following week. While they were at the bar the night before, his buddies slipped a bartender some cash to give Trevor her thong and that’s how her underwear got into his pocket. When asked where she was the night before after she got out of work, she claims she went home alone.
The ME calls about the autopsy and when they get to the ME’s office, they find out that Trevor had a thumb drive in his stomach. When they try to open the files, they find that it is a video file that is encrypted. While searching his house, Antonio and Nagel find a letter from a bank that said his bank account balance qualified him for a “wealth” account. His bank balance was $250,000 and after talking to the fiance they find out that it was an advance payment for a book deal. The book was supposed to be about his time in the military.
Later, Antonio and Nagel are are told that they were able to decrypt the video file on the thumb drive. When the team sits down to watch the video it looks like a body cam video of a mission he was on while in the Navy. The video appears to be proof of a friendly fire incident that killed several people involved in this mission. The mission was called Operation Omega and it was a rescue mission that was meant to rescue a doctor who was part of Doctors Without Borders. They claimed that the operation went bad when Dr. Carter was killed, but instead of it being the kidnappers that killed her, it was one of the SEALs that killed her.
When they sit down with Dr. Carter’s parents, it sounds like they were told that she was killed by enemy soldiers, Trevor went out to the car when the team went to break the news to the family. They said he seemed really upset about Dr. Carter’s death. The Carters also mention that they got a check in the mail for $100,000, Valdez thinks that it was sent to them by Trevor.
Antonio and Nagel get a lead on two of the SEALs that were part of the team Trevor was on and they were both in town the night that Trevor was killed. They were in town because they were the other men that were part of his bachelor party and hunting trip. . They get the name of the place they stayed at and the owner tells Nagel and Antonio that the two men were crammed in the room and she offered them the two bedroom suite upstairs, but they declined and said that they wanted the fireplace. Nagel gets curious and looks inside to find ashes and in the ashes there were zippers, like they burned their clothes. They find out that the two men just left and they catch up to them before they head back home.
While prepping for the trial, the team get a visit from a woman from the DOJ, National Security division claiming that they have a piece of property belonging to the US Navy and they want it back. This property they are talking about is the thumb drive with the friendly fire video on it, their biggest piece of evidence against the two SEALs they suspect killed Trevor to keep him quiet. The next day, Stone finds himself fighting in a federal court about whether or not he can hold onto the video for his trial, but Stone isn’t convinced that they will win this.
The next morning, Stone gets a surprise when the judge finds in his favor, but Jefferies tells Stone that he won’t be using the video. This is because Jefferies is former military and he thinks that if the US Military was hiding the truth about this operation, it was for a good reason and they will keep that way. Stone says that it will probably cost them the case, but Jefferies says he doesn’t give a damn and Stone tells him that he does. Jefferies then tells him that he knows what to do then, take Jefferies order to keep the video out of evidence, or find a new job!
Stone went to talk to Trevor’s father to tell him that the military didn’t tell him the truth about the mission and Trevor was about to go public and that’s what got him killed. He adds that he can’t tell him the truth or reveal the truth about the mission in court so there is a chance that his son’s killers will go free. The father says that he understands which isn’t the reaction that Stone was expecting.
Stone gets an idea, they can’t use the video, but they can try to get one of the men arrested to turn on the other. He was able to talk one of them in to admit in court that him and the other SEAL murdered Trevor as a last resort to keep him quiet. The problem is, the one they talked into it is also the ex-boyfriend of Trevor’s fiance, Mia and the defense attorney plays his testimony for the plea deal off as him having a personal vendetta against Trevor.
During the defenses line of questioning, the SEAL with the deal testifies that they killed Trevor because of the Ukraine, which is where Operation Omega took place. Stone redirects and asks him what he meant by that and he tells the court about what really happened in the Ukraine and when the defense tries to object, he nicely asks the judge if he could answer the questions. She allows it.
Jefferies was in the courtroom when this started, but left after the story came out and later Stone shows up with his letter of resignation. Jefferies tells him to rip it up and then leaves. He goes by the bar that Trevor’s father owns to have a drink with him and check on him. They talk about their time in the military and how hard it is to talk about some of the things they saw over there. They have another drink to that.
