The preview for the sixteenth episode of The Flash Season 3 opens with Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) vowing to get Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) back from the speed force. As we saw at the finale of the previous episode of The Flash Season 3, Kid Flash traded places with the evil speed god Savitar and is now trapped within the speed force itself. After we see Iris (Candice Patton) react to Wally’s promise to save her brother, we see Cisco (Carlos Valdes) uttering the phrase “To infinity…and beyond” as he and Barry vibe away into the speed force.
H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) is shown declaring the speed force to be a “crazy place” and soon we glimpse Barry fighting the ghosts he’s previously encountered on The Flash Season 3 and earlier seasons. Everyone from Captain Cold to Jay Garrick confronts Barry as he struggles to make it through the speed force to find Wally. Will Barry be able to locate Kid Flash and find a way for them both to return to Central City? Or will Wally West be forever trapped inside the speed force?
One possibility could be that after failing to free Barry from the speed force, Wally becomes so angry with his former mentor that he becomes a spirit of festering rage existing in the speed force. As he is tormented for years by visions that warp his sense of reality, Wally could lose those parts of himself that make him Kid Flash and replace them with the bitterness and wrath of Savitar. That could be how he knows so much about Barry and what Iris means to him. This is all conjecture, however, as The Flash Season 3 has carefully doled out hints as to Savitar’s identity that leave viewers without any concrete answers…yet.
