The latest episode of Riverdale Season 1 opens with a grotesque reimagining of Riverdale as a live action of its most classic comic moments. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) dons a crown more akin to his counterpart in the funny pages as he has all too real visions of his drunken father and of his best pal Archie (K.J. Apa) asking him why he stabbed him in the back. Archie turns to reveal an actual knife in his back as Jughead snaps out of his vision.
It is then revealed that the time is 5:45am and Jughead has been sleeping at Riverdale High after leaving home. Archie discovers this as well and Jughead explains he’s been living in the school since the Drive-In was shut earlier in Riverdale Season 1. He tells Archie things have been spiraling downward ever since Archie’s dad fired his father F.P. (Skeet Ulrich) and while Archie invites Jughead to move in with him, Jughead declines and only asks for Archie’s secrecy.
Later, Betty (Lili Reinhart) catches the gang up on the events of the previous episode of Riverdale Season 1 including Polly‘s (Tiera Skovbye) pregnancy, the burning car Jason and she had stashed, and even hints at the budding romance between Betty and Jughead. Archie and Veronica (Camila Mendes) both pick up on said hint and approve of the prospect of Bughead going forward. Archie also tells Jughead that he’s gotten his father to agree to give Jughead’s dad F.P. another shot at a job with his construction firm.
Meanwhile, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) reveals to her mother and Sheriff Keller that it was likely an escaped Polly that torched the car full of evidence on the previous episode of Riverdale Season 1. The school is then abuzz with news of Cheryl’s tweet declaring Polly Jason’s murderer and telling the citizens of the town with pep to start sharpening their pitchforks since there is #nowheretohide. Archie and the gang then set out to find Polly before anybody else does.
Back at the Jones’ Residence, Jughead returns to find his father at the bottom of a bottle after refusing to return to work for Fred (Luke Perry). Jughead asks his father to take the job in hopes of reuniting their family and bringing his mother and his sister Jellybean home.
At Sweetwater River, Archie and Co. scour the area for signs of Polly. While they search, Archie apologizes to Betty for not being there for her-like Jughead was-in her time of need. Meanwhile, Veronica tells Kevin (Casey Cott) that she is planning on getting back at her mother by going out on a bender with a dimwitted piece of arm candy, in this case Reggie Mantle (Ross Butler). Archie and his posse aren’t the only ones on the hunt for Polly, however, as they run into the Blossoms and their own search party for Polly who them believe to be Jason Blossom’s murderer.
Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) then has a talk with her daughter Betty where she explains that the fact that the Blossoms don’t know the whole story acts to their advantage. Alice then holds a press conference where she reveals that Polly is pregnant with Jason Blossom’s baby and she could not have hurt him since she was under supervision and wouldn’t want to wish to hurt the father of her unborn child.
Jughead and Betty walk home and Betty confides in Jughead that this isn’t the first time Polly ran away. She plants a kiss on Juggie and then runs off, seemingly having realized Polly’s hiding place. She then returns home and ascends into her attic where she does indeed find her sister who begs her for help. Polly explains she doesn’t want to give up her child and after Betty’s parents are shown to be lying about Polly’s intentions to give up her baby for adoption, she attempts to figure out a way to help her with the aid of Cheryl. Cheryl tells Betty that they are on the same team now that Polly is carrying Jason’s baby. She offers financial assistance and the help of her parents going forward, but Betty is skeptical.
At Fred Andrews’ construction business, Fred invites F.P. back into the fold. F.P. accepts the position and runs into Hermione (Marisol Nichols) who is fearful of him after he shook her down previously in Riverdale Season 1. After their first day of work, however, Fred tells Archie and Jughead that F.P. is his best worker and the four of them share a meal and memories of Fred’s high school band “The Fred Heads” at Pop Tate’s. When the bill comes, F.P. bristles at the idea of Fred paying and pays himself.
At the Lodges’ residence, Veronica readies herself for a night of acting up and out as she attempts to get her mother to tell her father the truth about giving the Drive-In development contract to Fred. When her mother tells her she can’t right at that moment, Veronica slinks off to her night with Josie (Ashleigh Murray), Kevin, and Reggie. She confides in them that her mother told her nobody could ever take her name after everything was seized from them following her father’s arrest.
When her card is declined at a club later, Veronica happily pays with cash and explains her mother cancelling her credit cards is merely another move in the Lodge Ladies’ chess. When Veronica returns home, Hermione explains to her that she has feelings for Fred and with things in the air with Mr. Lodge, she isn’t sure yet of how she feels. Veronica agrees to allow the affair to go on as long as it isn’t under their roof and her father is told that it wasn’t her signature on the land deal.
F.P. then reveals to Archie and Jughead that he co-founded Andrews Construction with Fred as partners. F.P. found himself in tough financial times, however, and this led him to getting jobs that weren’t always “on the level.” He then tells them that Fred pushed him out of the business. Fred later reveals to Archie that F.P. was stealing things from Andrews Construction and selling them on the side. He tells his son that he gave F.P. plenty of second chances, often bailing him out from prison. Fred says that there’s only so much you can do to save someone who is drowning before they drown you too. Archie then asks him what it means if Jughead drowns too.
At Riverdale High, Jughead returns to the suspect wall and Sheriff Keller appears to lead him away. Sheriff Keller then tells Jughead that his prints were on file from an incident six years earlier when he was accused of attempting to burn down Riverdale Elementary. He goes on to accuse Jughead of murdering Jason Blossom in response to being bullied. Jughead refuses to respond to the accusations and asks for a lawyer. Betty talks with Jughead and explains she doesn’t suspect him of a thing and while no one knows where Jughead’s father is, Fred and Archie were at the station. Fred vouches that Jughead was working for him the day Jason was shot and Sheriff Keller releases him from prison.
As they exit, F.P. approaches in a drunken state and has a brief confrontation with Fred. Archie asks F.P. if Jughead can stay with them and F.P. agrees. He pleads with Jughead to believe that he just needs a month or so to get his act together and their family back under one room. Jughead somehow manages to say he does even though it is apparent he has severe doubts and other feelings on the subject. Later, at Andrews Construction, Fred forges a time card for Jughead to act as an alibi.
After her mother asks questions that seem to suggest ulterior motives, Cheryl begins to grow suspicious of her family’s intentions towards Polly. At Pop Tate’s, Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Polly wait to be reunited with the Blossoms, but only Cheryl shows up. She warns them that Polly that it isn’t safe for her or her brother’s baby as she thinks her parents want Polly out of the picture. Veronica then offers Polly a place to stay and the latest episode of Riverdale Season 1 ends with Polly Cooper moving in with the Lodges as Jughead movies in with the Andrews. The final shot of the seventh episode of Riverdale Season 1 reveals Jason Blossom’s varsity jacket, thought destroyed in the car fire, is hanging in the closet at the Jones’ residence where F.P. has clearly fallen off the wagon hard.
