With the passing of William on This Is Us Season 1 last time, it was now time to celebrate his life with his memorial. However, William wanted it to be a fun memorial, so he wrote a letter asking for the girls to plan it and no adults! Besides the tears coming, we saw the drama with Jack & Rebecca continue on This Is Us on NBC 2017, as she hit the road with her band for the tour! Check out all the details from “What Now?” below in our This Is Us Season 1 Recap!
Last time on This Is Us on NBC 2017, we had THE most emotional episode of the season. I mean, this was ugly, heaving cry kind of an episode. William and Randall packed their bags and took a road trip to Memphis. We learned more about William’s life and him growing up. I mean, it was such an amazing episode and such great acting from both actors. In the end, William had his fun and got to show his son his life, so his journey had come to an end and William passed away. I knew this was coming, but wow, did I not expect it heading into the episode!
Warning: This post contains spoilers from This Is Us tonight on NBC, so stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happened!!!
We flash back to William backing up before the trip and grabbing everything, as now Randall is in his room and going to back things up. Beth comes in and said he does not need to clean up the room yet. Randall is trying to think of something to do to keep his legacy going, but Beth said now he needs to just show up to the service. She then finds an envelope in the bed and said William needs to read this!
Now Kevin is on the phone and trying to get some play critic to come to his show, as he was at the opening, but Kevin walked out. Sophie is with him and thinks it is hot of him being loyal. They talk about her coming to his play and sitting with his family, but she is not ready not.
Back to Randall, as William wants the girls to plan the memorial and make it fun, as adults make it boring. The girls are in charge, so Beth is cancelling everything since the girls won’t be using her ideas. Randall said he would like to give a eulogy, that is all he asks. We then see Kate trying to get rainbow balloons ordered, per the girls request!
We go to the past, as Rebecca is packing up and wants Jack there, who is at work celebrating some birthday of a guy he doesn’t even like! Miguel talks him into going home. Rebecca is not happy he is late and she is giving instructions and he is not having it. A fight before she hits the road? Her ride comes and hugs for everyone, but definitely tension between Jack & Rebecca when she leaves. Kate tells him to do it right, but he goes outside and Rebecca is already gone.
Randall is now working on the eulogy, as he gets a call from Jesse, William’s friend. He talks about their meeting and telling them about William and he shares a story about William learning about football to make a new guy have someone to relate to.
Kevin barges into the play critic’s office, as he persuaded the secretary to get in. Kevin begs him to come to the opening of the play, but the critic said he already did and Kevin is nothing without a laugh track. Kevin asks him to give them another chance on This Is Us Season 1.
Back to Randall, the mailman comes in and has some perishables. He asks about Randall and how his health is doing, since he has not seen him around. Apparently William and the mailman used to chat on his morning walks and the mailman gets emotional! It looks like William took the time out of his life for everyone, which most people don’t do nowadays. Beth is not impressed with the gift from Randall’s work and is very short-tempered!
We go back to Jack, as he drops the kids off at their party. Kate stays in the car and asks Jack if everything is fine and why did he not go to her show? He said it is all fine and not to worry. Kate told him not to sit at home and be sad.
We are starting William’s memorial, as the family has arrived and the girls are starting with a day in his life. He loved breakfast, so they are eating breakfast and make sure to take your pills (just M&M’s for them).
Back to Jack, as he is sitting home alone and decides to go to the bar for the co-worker’s birthday. There is some woman there, who clearly wants Jack and she asks if he wants a drink and he gets one on This Is Us Season 1!
Now we see Beth talking with Randall, as she said she refilled all of William’s prescriptions. He never did it and knew he was not coming back from Memphis, but she did not. She said she loved him and she never got to say goodbye!
The girls have a drink, which they thought was his favorite drink. However, Beth said it was his favorite string of weed! Randall said he would like to speak, but he wants the person that was in it with him every day to talk and he gives the mic to Beth. She said she doesn’t know what to say, as she is mad at him. It gets very emotional. She said William will always be a part of their lives, even if he was only in it for a few months.
Kate walks out of the house and is crying. Toby asks if she is ok and she said she will be and goes outside on This Is Us Season 1. Randall comes out to comfort Kate and tells her of having a dream the night before and it was Jack and William meeting and talking. Kate is crying and said this all brought so many emotions out of her. Randall said she has to express those feelings and tell the people she loves, like Toby! She said she knows.
Back to the bar, Jack is talking to the female coworker and talking about Rebecca being on tour with her band. She puts her hand on Jack’s leg and said she knew something was wrong. He takes her hand off his leg and said she is embarrassing him and herself and he is a married man.
At the memorial on This Is Us Season 1, they all have on their hats like William wore and time for a walk for the family, as Randall is wearing his real hat. Kate tells Toby that she wants to tell him about her father and they can talk after Kevin’s play. Kevin happens to leave to go to that play now. Rebecca talks to Randall and said he always had this kindness about him and she thinks he gets that from William. She explains to him why she never told Randall about William and she was being selfish and he did not get enough time with William. He said he got enough to know he loved him and he loves her.
We are at Kevin’s play and he is backstage getting ready. Sophie comes back to give him a crutch for when he breaks his leg tonight! We see the play and it comes to an end, with a standing ovation and no critic in the seat he left a ticket for! Then we see Sophie sneak out the back door, like she said she would. The family all goes backstage to give Kevin some love.
Beth and Randall are walking in the streets and he said he has to go to work and there is something he has to do. At his office, Randall talks to his boss and said he sent him pears for his father’s memorial and he is allergic to pears and he knows that. He has been trying to figure out how to carry on William’s legacy and this is it. He quits his job! His boss asks what he will do and Randall said maybe instead of a run in the morning, he will take a walk and talk to the mailman. You know, slow things down!
Sophie meets Kevin outside and she said sorry the play critic was not there. Kevin said it is fine. He did not come to New York for a hit play, but he came there for her and he is not messing it up this time. They head home and finally do it, as they haven’t since being back together!
Beth gets home and there is a postcard from Memphis, as William sent it to her! He said he would send it and tells her goodbye to the daughter he never had (ugh, ugly tears)!
In bed, Kevin gets a call and it is Ron Howard! He happened to be at the play and is going to be shooting a movie soon and thinks Kevin would be perfect in it. It shoots in Los Angeles, so now he has to decide between a movie and Sophie!
Then we see Kate talking with Toby and she said it is about her father’s death and she is responsible for it! We flashback to Jack and he calls the party to make sure the kids can stay there and then asks to talk to Kate. He tells her she was right and she is going to fix things with Rebecca. He hangs up and then drops his keys, as he is a little tipsy? Then we see him in the car and maybe he is heading to the show a couple hours away? The song’s lyrics are about every road leading to an end, so he dies in a drunk driving accident???
