The team are disavowed on a mission abroad and must avoid authorities in MacGyver season 1 episode 17. For a refresher on what happened last week, read my recap of episode 16.
MacGyver season 1 episode 17 opens with Angus MacGyver, Jack Dalton and Riley Davis in a shooting match. They’re in trouble when Wilt Bozer shows up to offer them a ride back to the airport. It turns out, this was all Bozer’s daydream.
On Bozer’s first mission with the team, they find a bomb and have to drive to a secluded area so it won’t hurt anyone. They all jump out of the van just before the bomb goes off. But, when the Amsterdam police arrive, they think that the Phoenix Foundation team are the terrorists. So, they run away.
The team manages to get away from the cops, for now. Bozer asks why they can’t just explain what happened. MacGyver says that even if they can convince them they aren’t terrorists, they were still illegally spying on an ally.
Because of the consequences of a U.S. agency being caught spying, Matty Webber has to completely disavow all four agents. This means they’re stranded without help in a country where the authorities suspect them of being terrorists.
Dalton tells the others that he knew a guy who got disavowed. He says that not only did he go to prison four years, he was also never able to return home.
The team talks to Olivia Parson, the woman they found carrying the bomb in the first place. She says that someone called her, told her to pick up the package and then drop it once someone followed her. The team realizes this means someone knew they’d be there, which means they were set up. They figure out that it’s their former boss Patricia Thornton.
Riley reports that the encryption key on the messages to Olivia match the ones Thornton used. However, she can’t prove that this was orchestrated by Thornton.
Thanks to Matty covertly sending the team intel, Riley realizes she can clear their names but only if she can enter the Dutch Intelligence Agency. This means Bozer will have to make them prosthetics good enough to get past security.
Bozer asks how he can make the prosthetics without any of his materials. MacGyver tells him he’ll have to improvise. Bozer and MacGyver look through the drawers in Olivia’s kitchen for supplies.
During the mission in the Dutch Intelligence Agency, the team comes close to arrest. But, just in time, Riley is able to broadcast a video that proves they didn’t plant the bomb, they found it and drove it to safety.
Back at the Phoenix Foundation, MacGyver tells Bozer he did good work on the mission. But, Bozer says that at least for now he wants to stay back at the lab.
