Daphne Vasquez witnesses a racist display aimed at the Black Student Union on campus in Switched at Birth season 5 episode 4. For a refresher on what happened last week, read my recap of episode 3.
Switched at Birth season 5 episode 4 opens with Bay Kennish visiting Emmett Bledsoe. At first, she’s extremely concerned about him, but he says that he’s fine and he just needed to talk.
Later, Daphne walks with Sheree to the Black Student Union. She sees that there are cotton balls everywhere. Daphne asks why. Sheree says, “Because somebody’s trying to put us in our place.”
Daphne is shocked. But, Sheree says that she’s not surprised. Daphne says she’s sure they’ll find whoever did this, but Sheree says, “I wouldn’t hold your breath.”
Later, Bay finds Travis Barnes to tell him that she plans on giving Emmett a tattoo. But, she finds him busy focusing on training for baseball. So, she says that what she wanted to tell him isn’t important.
At practice, Travis sees Chris Walker training. Then, John Kennish informs him that Chris is starting at their next game.
Later, Daphne talks to Iris Watkins, who’s doing a hunger strike to get the university to expel the people who put cotton balls outside the Black Student Union. Daphne tries to convince her she doesn’t have to do this. But, Iris tells her that she doesn’t get it.
Daphne tries talking to the Dean of Student Wellness. But, she says that she couldn’t “prove intent” to have the students expelled.
Later, Daphne talks to Regina Vasquez and Sheree about Iris’ hunger strike. But, their conversation is interrupted when they find a photo on Daphne’s car. It’s a picture of her and Mingo and the words “watch your back” are written on it.
Kathryn Kennish gets dinner with a major donor to the university named Gavin Bauers. He immediately starts making sexist comments.
Bay works on Emmett’s tattoo. They reminisce about the past. Bay pulls herself out of it and says it’s getting laid and she should get to work on the tattoo.
John talks to Melody Bledsoe. She says that Travis has been working hard on baseball. John tells her, “It’s not enough.”
Travis visits Emmett. He notices that his shoulder is hurt. Emmett claims it’s just banged up. Travis lifts up his sleeve and sees the tattoo. When he finds out that Bay did it, he storms out.
Travis and Chris both pitch at practice. Travis fumbles. John asks, “Where’s your head at?”
The Dean of Student Wellness approaches Iris and the other students protesting, including Daphne. Sheree tells her that if she doesn’t understand this, she’s part of the problem. Security takes Sheree away. The other protesting students keep changing, “We won’t go!”
