If you missed last week’s episode of Chicago Med season 2, check out my Chicago Med 2017 recap right here for all the details! Tonight’s episode of Chicago Med season 2 started off with Choi and the team being called out to the scene of a multi-vehicle accident in the middle of a blizzard. One of the victims is a pregnant woman who is found on the ground a few yards from her car. Meanwhile, the hospital is scrambling because they are short on room, supplies and staff. On scene, one of the cars exploded and the man caught inside and Choi gets him to the hospital, but Latham tells him that he is most likely going to die and treating him is only going to take resources away from patients that have a chance to live. Choi isn’t happy about this at all.
There is a family brought it from the crash. Mom, Dad, son and nephew. The nephew is visiting with his aunt and uncle because his parents are out of the country. Meanwhile, the pregnant woman they brought in is hemorrhaging and they think that her clotting ability has been compromised because amniotic fluid has made it’s way into her blood stream. They have to do an emergency c-section right there because they only have a few minutes before they lose mom and baby! They are able to deliver the baby and get the mom stable, but they need to get her closed up and replace the blood she has lost.
Choi breaks the news to his burn patient that he is dying and he begs Choi to keep him alive until his wife get there so he can say good-bye. Choi tells him that he will do what he can. Meanwhile, there are some hard decisions that have to be made with the two boys that were brought in. The nephew has a better chance of survival, but both of them need blood. There isn’t enough to treat both the boys so it is up to the mom to choose whether her son or her nephew get the blood. She is told that her nephew has a greater chance of survival, but that they will do everything they can to keep her son alive until more blood gets to the hospital. She isn’t sure that she can make this decision and Goodwin tells her that if she prefers, they can make the decision for her.
Meanwhile, Rhodes goes to Choi and tells him that he is sorry about his burn patient but that they are running out of ventilators and they need the one his patient is on for the others. Choi tells Rhodes that he can’t do that, that his patient just needs to stay alive long enough to say good-bye. Rhodes tells him that they can’t wait. Choi is really upset about this and does the only thing there is left to do, he takes him off the ventilator and bags him. He has vowed to keep him breathing manually until his wife gets there.
Dr. Charles was asked to talk to a patient who was moved from a room to the waiting area when the accident victims started to roll in. The patient’s name is Jack Kellogg and he is a psych patient whose doctor is out of town. He is in need of meds, but in order to get them he needs to sit down with Dr. Charles. Moments later, Reese comes and tells Dr. Charles that they need him in the psych ward because a patient has attacked a nurse there. Dr. Charles tells Jack that he will be right back to help him but when he gets back Jack is gone. Later, Jack’s brother calls the hospital and asks to talk to the doctor that couldn’t take the time to talk to his brother and when Dr. Charles gets on the phone, he finds out that Jack shot himself and is dead.
Manning goes to Goodwin about the other boy who still needs blood, this comes after the Dad tells the Mom that she is a horrible person for not giving the blood to their son. Manning has an idea, she is going to hold a blood drive in the staff lounge to try and find a match for the other boy and help some of the other patients. Choi is told by April that Rhodes needs him on a patient coming in, but Choi tells her that he can’t because his patient still needs more time. April tells him that they need him and the patient actually puts his hand on Choi’s arm as a way to tell him it’s ok to stop and let him die even though his wife isn’t there yet.
We end tonight’s episode off with Choi being able to save the life of the boy because he is a match to his blood type so they hook him up to a bag and run it right through the transfusion machine. Within a few moments, the boys blood pressure is coming up and he is starting to stabilize. Choi’s burn patient’s wife walked in and Rhodes is there to talk to her because Choi is still on the transfusion machine. When he is finished, he is standing in the doorway of the ED and Reese walks up just to make small talk with him.
Jack Kellogg turns up to be just fine, it was him that called the hospital claiming to be his brother and telling that lie. Dr. Charles puts him on a psych hold due to his behavior. Rhodes admits to Latham that he envied his autism today because he was able to make decisions without his emotions taking control.
