“Untouchable,” the 12th episode of The Flash Season 3, opens with Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Wally West (Keiynon Lonsdale) pushing the limits of their speed. Their alter-egos, the Flash and Kid Flash respectively, are engaged in a footrace as Team Flash follows the action (and bets on it) back at HQ. The two speedsters are head-to-head throughout until Barry phases through a building to cross the finish line first leaving Kid Flash the sidekick for one more day.
Julian (Tom Felton) investigates a rapidly decomposing body while Joe (Jesse L. Williams) and Barry have a pleasant talk with Iris (Candice Patton). Pleasant for Joe, that is, as he doesn’t have the knowledge of Iris’ impending doom hanging above him. After Joe leaves, Iris bemoans the future changing into that of Barry’s vision of her demise, but Barry holds out hope they can outrun her fate.
Julian brings the corpse from the earlier crime scene to S.T.A.R. Labs to examine it with the lab’s tech. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Julian are shocked when they unzip the bodybag to find the body now completely decomposed. Meanwhile, Clive Yorkin (Matthew Kevin Anderson) preys on his next victim by giving a musician a deadly decomposing metahuman handshake.
Kid Flash continues his phase training unsuccessfully as Barry does his best to impart his wisdom. At the crime scene of Yorkin’s latest victim, Joe reveals the victim’s name. This information causes Barry to realize the disintegrating corpses have been those of police officers in the “Flashpoint” Universe previously seen on The Flash Season 3. Julian and Caitlin rush an autopsy on the victim so as to complete it before what’s left of the body disintegrates. In their analysis, they uncover that the metahuman killer was created by Julian during his run as Dr. Alchemy.
Meanwhile, Joe invites Barry, Iris, and Wally to coffee with his girlfriend, Cecile (Danielle Nicolete), and her daughter. Over coffee, Cecile and her daughter take sides in the Flash vs. Kid Flash debate and attempt to goad Joe into taking sides as well. Wally secretly basks in the adoration of Cecile’s daughter until Yorkin interrupts them. Confusing Joe for the Joe West of his Earth, Yorkin begins to disintegrate his way towards Joe as Joe fires bullets that simply melt away when they touch Yorkin. Before Kid Flash can deck Yorkin, Barry spares Wally’s fists this same fate by signaling for the speedster to create a whirlwind. This sends Yorkin flying and Joe is saved, but Yorkin disappears in the chaos.
Back at Team Flash HQ, Iris finally breaks the news about Barry’s vision of her possible future death. He is understandably upset at the news of his daughter’s possibly certain demise and questions why Barry didn’t tell him sooner. The point of Iris’ death in some tomorrow is quickly moot, however, as Yorkin arrives to kill her today. Kid Flash is quickly on the scene, but he is too late to stop Yorkin from getting his irradiated mitts on Iris.
Kid Flash whisks Iris back to Team Flash HQ where the gang decides to have Caitlin use her Killer Frost powers to create some healing frost. This stops the spread of the meta-disease that threatens to take Iris’ limbs and life. With Iris safe, Barry seeks out Wally and apologizes for doubting his abilities when he first heard of Yorkin’s attack on Iris.
Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) interrupt Barry’s pep talk with the idea of using Cisco’s vibe powers to track down Yorkin’s next victim before he can strike. Cisco then vibes the final name on Yorkin’s hit list: Laura Stone. Joe quickly finds Laura and tells her the news not realizing that Yorkin is watching them far a distance they’d likely find far too close for their comfort.
Barry and Julian debate the merits of using his blood to save Iris when she goes into shock as her disintegration spreads. Julian must then talk Caitlin down from her Killer Frost persona so that she may save Iris. Again in her Healing Frost state, Caitlin is able to keep Iris’ decay at bay.
Yorkin then continues his question for revenge by attempting to destroy the train Laura Stone is on by bringing a structure crashing down across its tracks. Less powerful than the locomotive and unable to stop it, Barry nevertheless saves the day. By using his powers to vibrate the entire train, it phases safely through the fallen debris. This new feat leaves Barry exhausted and he tells Wally he must accomplish a feat of his own for the first time. Barry explains Wally must phase a drop of Barry’s blood into Yorkin to stop him. Wally heroically does so, leaving Yorkin powerless and Kid Flash with another victory in The Flash Season 3.
The gang rallies around a recuperating Iris back at Team Flash HQ. Joe cautions the gang to stay honest going forward if they hope to have any shot against Savitar. Caitlin and Julian share a brief romantic moment and she asks him out for a drink. No doubt the two will have much to talk about such as keeping villainous personalities repressed and the like.
The latest episode of The Flash Season 3 doesn’t end there, however, as we see Wally successfully phasing through a wall. He only has seconds to celebrate his new ability as Jesse Quick appears from her Earth with the news that Grodd has captured her father, Harrison Wells, and is holding him captive in Gorilla City.
While this episode took both a few steps forwards and back with regards to the possible inevitability of Iris’ death, The Flash 2017 continues to move a number of other storylines along. Chief among these is the continued evolution of Kid Flash as more than just a sidekick in The Flash Season 3. As his powers continue to approach those of Barry’s, Wally balances cockiness with dedication to create a sympathetic, yet flashy, hero.
Another great addition to The Flash Season 3 was seeing more of Joe’s love interest. While any appearances by Joe are always welcome, it is great to see him become a character in his own right beyond the Central City police force and Team Flash. While they mostly talked Flash and panicked at Yorkin’s attack, their date was a fun new insight into Joe’s personality. Their relationship and the beginnings of the romance between Julian and Caitlin gave the latest episode of The Flash Season 3 a lighter feeling for the moment while dark clouds almost certainly gather on the horizon. And I’m not (just) talking about the Weather Wizard.
