This week on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Abby and Barb hit the town on the prowl. Phoebe hits the good ole outdoors for some old fashioned camping. While Jo and Delia both deal with their recent failed relationships and try to move on.
When we last left off, Jo had discovered that Scott left after she had called it quits. Heartbroken and without her baker, she doesn’t know what to do. Naturally, her incredible daughter – Zoey – decides to play hookie from school and spend the day baking up a storm with her mom. Easy things, cookies, muffins, anything they can’t mess up. As they’re about to wrap up, they realize that there’s a cake tasting tomorrow and Jo needs to make a wedding cake. No pressure. After a few failed attempts she decides to go with Plan B and find a cake that could be passed off as a wedding cake.
After finding said cake, she comes back to her dishwasher not having cleaned up, instead he baked the cake and it’s perfect. Jo’s found her new baker and this tasting will happen. During the tasting she finally realizes that she’s sad about Scott, she loved him, and she misses him. All of him not his barracuda sized… Okay, Jo misses him but she’s going to get through this. She’s got Zoey by her side and her girlfriends are there to help. Oh and Frumpkis comes back. There’s that.
Meanwhile, Delia is deciding to move on and goes on her first date since Gordon left. Big step in the healing process but she wants to go for it. Work’s good, she’s killing it with this case and has all the looneys off her back. Of course the case makes her leave her date early and find her client stuck in a penis mold. They decided to, I don’t even know why this was a thing. But it happened. So Delia goes into kickass lawyer mode, takes everyone’s phones, locks down the place makes sure they all sign non-disclosures and gets the thing off her client’s penis. Of course, it ends with her client asking for a handjob claiming word’s out that she’s an all-around lawyer (Gordon). She’s pissed and hurt, you can see it on her face but she’s going to make it through this. She’s a tough ass bitch.
Phoebe takes her kids out camping with JD to bond. She wants them to get along and really start to feel like a family. This outing, though, is a wake up call for Phoebe. Her little kids that we first met in season 1 are now grown. Her little girl more so, she’s not the little girl anymore. She’s a moody teenager that isn’t interested in half the things her mother is bringing up. By the end of the little trip, it looks like she’s warming up but then she’s hit with another slap to the face. Anook started her period three months back and got all the information she needed from her nanny, not her mom. Can Phoebe be a present parent now or is it too late?
Barb is working on her column and needs a night out, so Abby decides to tag along as her wing woman. They end up at a sports bar but things don’t exactly go the way they thought it would. As great as things start out, Abby is clearly out of her element and after a few drinks, she’s spitting out whatever is coming to her mind. This includes insulting Barb’s weight and eating habits. Barb is naturally hurt by all this. She wanted a night out to enjoy with her friend and here she was getting told that she’s too fat to be eating the way she does. Horrible call for Abby. She leaves pissed, but they make up the next day when Abby is sober. To all the ladies out there, your size doesn’t matter, you’re beautiful inside and out. Eat whatever you want, unless of course it’s bad for you and your doctor specifically told you not to.
Abby, aside from her night on the town with Barb, kicks off the episode with a meeting with her editor Kat. But Kat can’t make it and sends Melissa. (Side note – this Star Wars fan was really holding it in at this moment, seeing as Kat is played by the ever so lovely Carrie Fisher.) Melissa claims she’s looking horrible because her 27th birthday is slowly creeping up. Girl I feel you, so is mine. She starts to list off ideas for Abby to write about and eventually settles on a romance novel. AKA Soft porn. Abby is hesitant, of course, but her friends seem to think this is a great idea. She eventually caves and starts to write after an interesting interaction with the coach of her son’s baseball team. The episode finishes with Abby writing smut. This is every fanfiction writers dream and Lisa Edelstein made it come to life.
Speaking of, Edelstein wrote this episode and she kicked ass with it. Major props for the rendition of the hope line from Star Wars. All the Star Wars references are definitely not making it easier.
