If you missed last week’s episode of Lethal Weapon 2017, check out my full recap right here! Tonight’s episode of Lethal Weapon season 1 started off with a Texas Ranger transporting a prisoner when they are attacked by armed men and the Ranger is murdered. Meanwhile, Riggs is getting a ticket from bicycle cops for not having his dog on a leash at the park and he is mocking them the entire time. Oh, and he feeds the dog the ticket in front of the officers.
Murtaugh and Riggs get to the scene of the officer down and start looking things over. As they get to know the Sheriff in charge of the Rangers, they think that it may be an inside job. They go to ask some questions to the woman who was in charge of setting up the route, Leila Jones. The only thing they find out is that when they talk to the LAPD about their own, bad things happen. Apparently one of their officers had their dog shot for talking when they should have. She gives them a name of an officer who they suspect shot the dog, but could never prove and it just so happens to be the same officer that ok’d the route for the Ranger transport.
They found Leila at a bowling alley where Murtaugh holds a perfect game score and when a local officer starts bad mouthing Murtaugh, him and Riggs end up in a brawl. Meanwhile, Avery is having a talk with the head of the private police department and he is blackmailing Avery with a dark secret becoming exposed if he doesn’t pull Murtaugh and Riggs back.
When Murtaugh and Riggs go to talk to Avery the next day they mention Jeffery Beld, the man who Leila named as the man who shot the dog and OK’d the route. They find out that Beld has been investigated for excessive force in the past and they find out that the bullet in the dog, who was exhumed, matches the caliber of the bullet that killed the Ranger. It was fired from the same exact weapon.
They go to look for answers and come across Davies, the man who was being transported and shortly after they end up on a foot chase with him. Moments later, Barton, one of the pleasant sheriff’s deputies they met at the bowling alley where they talked to Leila, shows up and executes Davies and another person who shows up to back Barton up!
Avery took the blackmail threat seriously and hires Trish as his lawyer to help him through it. We later find out what his secret is, Peter Scirelly, a man that Avery put away for murder, may have been framed after the evidence they had was tainted. Avery admits to Riggs that he planted evidence to nail the guy. Riggs tells him that he has to tell Murtaugh. Later, Avery shows up to Murtaugh’s house to tell him the truth even after Trish tells him not to and then tells him that he will be resigning.
Riggs gets wind of Barton asking Murtaugh if he can get a sit down with his wife to have her represent him when they nail him for whatever crime they think he committed. Barton finds Riggs sitting outside his house later that night as a “don’t mess with me and my family” warning.
The next day, Murtaugh and Trish get into an argument about how she is representing Avery after he broke the law to put a man in prison. We then see Riggs still camping out on Barton’s house and when Barton leaves, Riggs stages a break-in and finds the ammo used to kill the dog and the ranger. When Murtaugh and Riggs go to talk to Avery, he isn’t in his office and he isn’t answering his phone. He is meeting with the guy who is blackmailing him and is able to get him recorded while admitting to knowing that Barton had something to do with it. Problem is, while Avery is playing the recorded statement, Barton is in the back seat of his car with a gun!
When Murtaugh gets there he finds out that Avery was playing a trick on the guy he was meeting with, make him think he was drunk and wouldn’t have thought to record the conversation. We then see Avery being tied to a chair by Barton and moments later he brings in Scirelly in and introduces him to the man who framed him for murder. Barton hands him a gun, but before Scirelly could shoot Avery, Riggs and Murtaugh drive their car through the front of the house and save Avery. Barton runs off and Riggs chases after him and is able to arrest him.
Later, Avery tells Murtaugh that he has to resign and Reed, the man blackmailing him and was also involved in the frame job, will keep his job. Murtaugh is pissed because when this goes public, all their convictions will be up for appeal or thrown out. Murtaugh is able to talk Avery out of it for the time being because he needs back up….at the bowling alley to prove that he bowled that perfect game.
