Tonight’s episode of Chicago Fire season 5 started off with a double date with Dawson, Casey, Antonio and Brett. Brett is roped into an anniversary party that is going to be a bit of a family reunion. Meanwhile, the next day at 51, Cruz and James are in the locker room and Cruz notices some pretty big bruises on James’ back. Right before Cruz and talk to Severide to find out what he should do, they get a call.
There are a couple of young kids in an abandon warehouse. They decided to jump off of something inside and one is laying on his stomach on the floor and can’t move, the other is stuck in the rafters upside down and not moving. They are able to get to him, get him down and get his circulation going again. He starts breathing again and comes to.
When they get back to 51, Herrmann calls Otis and Kidd over and tells them that he signed them up for the Mud 100, which is some kind of race. He tells them that Otis and Kidd will be handing out Molly’s t-shirts to help boost business. Meanwhile, Dawson and Brett are at Med and they hear that the kid who was upside down in the rafters was in ICU. Apparently he slipped into a coma on his way to the hospital and then went into cardiac arrest and they don’t know if he is going to make it.
Back at 51, they get another call about a motor vehicle accident involving a car and a tractor trailer. The truck driver is yelling that it was the woman driving the car’s fault and her passenger is eyeballing the truck driver the entire time. When they pry the passenger side door open, the male passenger runs over and tackles the truck driver. James is especially shaken by this fight and Severide notices this. They break up the fight and get everyone to the hospital.
Severide goes to see Boden when they get back to 51 to tell him about the bruises and James’ reaction to the fight at the scene of the MVA. Boden thanks him for the information. Meanwhile, Casey and Dawson are in the truck bay when the boy in the ICU’s father comes in and he is clearly upset. He tells them that his son, Wiley, is hanging in there but he is a nervous wreck. His wife told him to take a walk and he decided to head to 51 to thank them for doing everything they could for his son. Later, Casey swings by the hospital to check on Wiley and he finds out that he passed away.
Later we see as Boden pays a visit to his ex-wife to talk to her about James to find out what is going on with James, but she isn’t very helpful. When Casey gets back to the house, he doesn’t tell Dawson what happened with Wiley. They get ready to go to Dawson’s family party which starts off really well until Dawson’s father decides to break the news to the family that him and his wife are getting divorced. They were going to wait until after the party, but he couldn’t pretend that they were celebrating together. Dawson runs off and Casey stays to make sure that Antonio doesn’t do anything stupid. When he catches up to Dawson, she is crying in the stairwell.
Later, we find out whether Kidd or Otis won the Mud 100 run and Herrmann and Mouch find out which one owes who $200. Well, looks like Herrmann lost the bet because Otis won the race. Meanwhile, Boden and Donna asks James if he wants to stay with them and he tells him that he would like that. Boden then asks him what’s been going on with him, but he tries to play off a fall down the stairs.
He then tells Boden the truth, which is his mother’s new boyfriend has been beating James. He then goes to the boyfriend’s restaurant and beats on him. When he gets back to the firehouse, he is suspended for a shift for his behavior. It would have been worse if he wasn’t defending his stepson, who is a minor and can’t stand up for himself.
The episode ends with the team responding to a call for a man down, but when they get there, they find a man stuck in the back of a trailer holding grain. He is having a hard time staying above it because the shoot underneath the truck is open. Casey climbs up and tries to grab onto the guy and pull him out. They end up barricading the man with ply wood and digging around it to try and relieve the pressure. He is suffocating though. They are able to get him out of the grain and get him to the hospital.
When Dawson gets there Maggie asks her how Casey is doing, but she is confused by this answer. Maggie tells her what happened with Wiley and Dawson is clearly upset, but I’m not sure if she is upset about Wiley’s death or the fact that Casey kept it from her. Meanwhile, Boden gets a visit from James’ mother and she tells him that she left the boyfriend and that she swears she didn’t know. James decides to go and stay with his mother to make sure she is ok.
Dawson heads home and as soon as she sees Casey she gives him a big kiss and then tells him that he knew that Wiley died, but he was more concerned about her having a good time at her parent’s party. He tells her that that’s what they do for each other, they “lift each other.” Make sure you come back next week to find out what happens when Casey and Dawson make a major decision for their little family!
