Tonight’s part one of the two-part Dancing with the Stars Season 23 finale! The four remaining DWTS 2016 contestants (Calvin Johnson Jr. & Lindsay Arnold, James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess, Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko and Laurie Hernandez & Val Chmerkovskiy) will compete in two rounds in an attempt to earn America’s votes and top scores from the DWTS 2016 judges (Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Julianne Hough) as they each vie to win the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy. The two rounds are the redemption round and the freestyle round, where anything goes. Which couple will be eliminated just shy of tomorrow night’s action-packed DWTS 2016 season finale? Last week, the semifinalists competed in two rounds, one of which was the trio round, where the pairs danced with another pro partner. All five semifinalists performed amazingly well in the trio round and earned perfect scores from the judges. In the end, however, Terra Jolé & Sasha Farber were eliminated. This post contains Dancing with the Stars Season 23 spoilers for part one of the season finale. Please do not read any further if you do not want to know what happened on the show or who was eliminated on Dancing with the Stars 2016.
Tonight’s first round is the redemption round, in which the finalists will perform dance styles the judges have picked for them in hopes of showing how far they’ve come since the start of the competition. Let’s get down to it!
Calvin Johnson Jr. & Lindsay Arnold – Vienesse Waltz
Judges: Len said he’s without a doubt the most improved dancer in this final. This had such lovely fluidity of movement. It had a charm about it. Overall what a fabulous start to the evening. Julianne said he’s come so far in this competition. Everything was so much more on point than the first time he did the vienesse waltz. Bruno said he loved the way he swept his girl off her feet. He really took the lead. He was using the floor beautifully, and he’s always so watchable. Carrie Ann said she saw how far he’s come as a dancer. It felt like the ballroom was too small for him. She saw tremendous improvement from his last time.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 8, Len – 9, Julianne – 9, Bruno – 9 = 35/40
Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko – Tango
Judges: Julianne said her journey has been overcoming obstacles. She didn’t feel the same spark she was hoping for. Bruno said it sparked to him. He still thinks they’re hotter than hell. She has a full-blooded passion, determination and drive. She puts everything she’s got into the dance and what she’s achieved is incredible. It was slicker and cleaner than the first time. Carrie Ann said the first time there was a lack of confidence and strength and intensity. Tonight there was so much power. It was beautiful and she’s come so far. Len said with the lifts it’s all about intent and that shouldn’t be penalized.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 8, Len – 9, Julianne – 9, Bruno – 9 = 35/40
Laurie Hernandez & Val Chmerkovskiy – Paso Doble
Judges: Bruno said that was wicked in the best possible way. A knockout, a powerhouse. She always has precision and power. She had the shapes flowing and going. Carrie Ann said she wanted to see her expand and do all the shaping, and she did. She felt her joy and her determination. She’s the most determined soul she’s ever met, and it showed in that beautiful paso doble. Len said he loved the focus they had between each other. It was full of intent. He’s so glad she got to see her do the paso doble because there was nothing in that dance she didn’t like. Julianne said she wanted to see more chemistry last time. She obviously can tell they’ve been working on that, not just in that dance but this entire season. These dances are super important to see the growth, and they 100% showed that.

We take a break from the performances to hear Train play their newest single, “Play That Song” while some of the pros dance. Cute!
James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess – Foxtrot
Judges: Carrie Ann said he glided through the dance like he’s ice skating. He is so right. Len said if you went to that bookshelf and looked up dance talent, you’d find James Hinchcliffe. Julianne said he’s always been the whole package since day one. It was the perfect foxtrot. Bruno said what he found outstanding is it’s like a book. Every chapter was composed to perfect. Every punctuation was so in character. It was top quality from prologue to the ending. He was totally engrossed.

It’s time for the freestyle round! No rules. Anything goes. It’s going to be awesome!
Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko – Freestyle to “Unstoppable” by Sia
Judges: Len said when you dance that show any little hiccup can be seen so clearly. What a beautiful performance and a wonderful dance. Julianne said they should all be so proud for getting here. They put everything they had in it tonight. There was a stumble, but they took a risk and it worked. Bruno said they were tied up by an unbreakable bond. It was such an emotional roller coaster, like watching life unfolding. Overall she succeeded in the end. She doesn’t hold anything back and it’s wonderful to see. Carrie Ann said she has so much respectful for her. She’s the underdog. She’s developed and grown and they’ve pulled themselves up together. It was stunning.

Calvin Johnson Jr. & Lindsay Arnold – Freestyle to “Please Mr. Postman”/”I Want You Back” Medley by The Marvelettes/Jackson 5
Judges: Julianne said she loves that freestyle is a little bit of everything. She absolutely loved it. Bruno said he brought every quality into focus. Everything was absolutely right. Carrie Ann said the world needs a little more of him. He made the world a better place. It was amazing. Len said if he was a postman, he’d send him a love letter. Freestyle is about entertainment and dance. There’s no question that he can entertain, and he proved that he can dance.

We take another break to see a performance from the upcoming film, La La Land.
Laurie Hernandez & Val Chmerkovskiy – Freestyle to “Brand New” by Ben Rector
Judges: Bruno said he felt invigorated and joyful. She’s just fantastic. Carrie Ann said she delivered. She didn’t have any doubt that she’d be so incredible. She brought tears to her eyes because she was so happy. She is inspiring. That freestyle captured that essence and delivered it with a bang. Len said it was a joyful experience to watch. It was wonderful. Julianne said that was incredible and fresh and youthful and crisp. She represents sunshine and joy.
Scores: Carrie Ann – 10, Len – 10, Julianne – 10, Bruno – 10 = 40/40! (Amazing!)
James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgess – Freestyle to “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets” by The Piano Guys
Judges: Carrie Ann said in 23 seasons, she’s never seen a more intelligent, artistic, creative and well-danced freestyle. He is the miracle man of season 23. Len said it was so lovely to watch. It was poignant and brilliant. Wonderful choreography and a great dance. Julianne said every week he comes out and does his best dance and outdoes himself each week. It was one of the best freestyles she’s ever seen. Bruno said it was beyond dancing, it was visual poetry. Unforgettable.

Jana said this has been amazing. The people up there deserve to be there. She’s learned so much about herself and what she can do, and she commends Gleb for being an amazing partner.
