We had one of the strangest episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 tonight, as we had Meredith, Owen, Edwards and Webber working on one surgery all night long and it was flashbacks and hallucinations all night long. Um, was this The Sixth Sense or Grey’s Anatomy 2016? We were seeing dead people and I am still baffled! Check out all the intense action for the “The Room Where It Happens” episode on TGIT below in our Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Recap!
Last week on Grey’s Anatomy 2016, we saw Catherine and Bailey bring in an education consultant and she was definitely getting people riled up. Paranoia was taking over and she was making some big changes. Webber was not happy, but in the end thought she might be a good thing and they could work together. However, Dr. Eliza Minnick said if she is hired and takes the position, she works alone. Bailey is freaking, as Webber could be fired? We also saw April struggle with getting back in the dating world and Jackson encouraging her, but I think they both just truly want each other. Amelia avoided Owen until the very end, as she told him she does not want kids!
Warning: This post contains spoilers from Grey’s Anatomy tonight on ABC, so stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happened!!!
Meredith starts out talking about sleep and we don’t know why we do it, but we just need it. We then see a room being prepped for surgery and then the patient being brought it. We got Owen, Edwards and Meredith getting prepped. Meredith said she hasn’t slept in 48 hours and it looks like Owen and Edwards are in the same boat with no sleep. They have complications and blood everywhere, as Webber comes in to help and he has napped and ate lunch and feels good. As everyone is working crazy and stressed, Webber just keeps telling stories. The liver is shredded and now Meredith and Owen disagree on what to do with the kidney. Webber is trying to make it a teaching moment for Edwards. Meredith agrees to work on the kidney. Webber wants to know more about the patient and stop treating him like a sack of organs on the table. They proceed to give the person a name and identity to make the surgery more personal. Meredith said it is going to be a long day.
Now that she has a name, Webber needs a reason why they need to save her. The patient is Gail and she plays the cello. She does not have a dog, as she is busy with three kids. Edwards seems to be the only one participating in this game with Webber. Gail is crashing, but Meredith said they can’t stop bleeding and wants to take her to ICU. Webber said she would die in the elevator. Webber talks about a liver transplant, but Meredith shoots it down and tells Owen to stop the bleed and if he can’t, then it is up to the ICU.
This is so weird, as the patient is a man, but Webber is calling him Gail. Owen is still trying to stop the bleeding. Webber keeps talking about Gail and she was out late, as she took a night desk job at the hotel. He wants Owen to join in the game, but Owen said no and then we flashback to see Owen and his sister working on patients in the Army. We then see Owen struggling and they bring out the saw to cut his sternum. He is unsure this is going to work, so he flashes back and his sister said he only brings her around when he feels guilty. She told him to stop with this patient and he said you don’t stop until you save them or find out they are dead. She said, this guy is not me on Grey’s Anatomy Season 13!
His sister tells him what to do, so he comes back and tells Edwards to go get him a liver and he is going to cut it out! Meredith said not to make the cut, but Owen goes ahead and cuts it. He said Webber was right and the liver is making it worse for him.
They worry about getting a transplant and then Owen asks about Gail being strong. Now the patient is bleeding out of everything and Edwards tries to tell them, but no one is listening to her, as she flashes back and has a little girl telling her to tell them what it is. She yells at them to listen and said this guy has an auto-immune disorder and what they are saying won’t help. She said the only way to stop it would be to give him steroids. Without a liver, it would be tough and they have to monitor him. They may have found a match, but the patient is crashing and they don’t have much time here!
They are trying to bring back the patient, as he has crashed. They identified the patient and his family is waiting in the lobby, so Meredith said someone should go tell them. Now she flashes back to her kids and Derrick dying and telling them. They revive Carl, as they know his name now. They are taking him to ICU without a liver. After Meredith’s flashback, she said Webber did not makeup Gail, as we see him look and his mother said it is ok, he was only 10 years old and nothing he could do. How cryptic is this episode???
We now see Webber talking about his mother and how she hated doctors. She would play the cello for hours. He said he hated it, until one day it stopped and the house went silent. We find out she had pancreatic cancer. As they finish closing Carl up, Meredith said stop and they can fix him here! Um, what??? Apparently they are going to remove his own liver outside of his body, since Owen cut it out. They will give him a partial liver and it will help repair him, if it all works and they don’t have much time. More flashbacks of Owen’s sister, Meredith’s kids and little Stephanie. With all that, the liver is back in Carl and he is stable and headed to ICU. Meredith said she can update the family.
Meredith apologizes to Webber for what she said. She asked if he always does that with his mother. He said he never did, but they lost a patient once and he told their family and he was numb. They died from the same thing his mother dies from and he was a robot. He changed the rules and it made him a better surgeon.
One final speech from Meredith about sleep and how you don’t just sit down and give up. She said sometimes we makeup people and there is Derrick!!! A nurse comes back to snap her out of it, but she said whatever you need to keep you going.
