If you missed last week’s episode of Law & Order: SVU season 18, check out my Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 2016 recap right here!Tonight’s episode of Law & Order: SVU season 18 started off with Benson and the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, talking to the press about the rape kit backlog. They then announce that testing a rape kit from another city has set an innocent man free. The man’s name is Shawn and the victim in the case, Melanie Harper, is there with her daughter Ashley. Later, Fin and Rollins are called out to their home and they are told that Ashley was raped, stabbed, doused in bleach and burned. The mother smelled smoke and called 9-1-1. Melanie told Fin that she heard a man’s voice and it sounded like Shawn.
At the hospital, Benson is talking to Melanie, she tells Benson that she heard Ashley and Shawn talking around midnight, she took a shower and then went to bed. Ashley and her fiancee, Zack, had gotten into an argument about Shawn because he didn’t like him being around. Melanie just realized that Ashley’s engagement ring was missing off her finger. The doctor then comes out and tells them that Ashley didn’t make it.
Rollins and Fin go to talk to Shawn and he tells them that he went to the strip club with a friend of his after they all had dinner for Shawn’s birthday. His friend vouched for him, but then comes clean about Shawn not showing up to the club until about 2 in the morning. He then tells them that Ashley was upset and Shawn went to talk to her about it. They talk to Zack and he claims that he was at a bar and someone spilled wine on him so he went home and changed and went back to the bar.
His alibi checked out, but Shawn doesn’t have an alibi. Meanwhile, Rollins has been looking into Ashley’s social media accounts and finds a direct message from a guy name Charlie. She is telling him to stop looking in her windows and being creepy. They look into Charlie and find a tent on the roof of the building near Ashley and Melanie’s. They also found the missing knife that was missing from the Harper’s house and used to stab Ashley.
They bring Charlie in to talk to him about Ashley when Charlie’s mom and girlfriend comes in with an alibi for him. Him and his girlfriend were having sex on camera during the time of the rape and murder and he found the knife after the real killer tossed it into the garbage. Fin and Carisi bring Charlie back to the rooftop and he tells them everything that he remembers from that night. Including seeing Shawn toss the weapon.
They get a warrant to search Shawn’s apartment and they find Ashley’s engagement ring in the drain to his bathroom sink. They arrest him and bring him in for questioning, he claims someone is framing him. During the trial, we find out that Shawn, his friend, Melanie and Ashley all went out for Shawn’s birthday. Ashley was fighting with her fiancee about Shawn hanging around and Shawn joked with him about leaving Zack and being with him. Ashley and Melanie left the restaurant early because Shawn got drunk and he then went to their house to apologize.
Just when everything seemed to have been working in favor of the case, they called Charlie to the stand and he completely bombed the case by telling the defense that he thought Rollin’s would like him if he said he saw Shawn leave the Harper residence at 1:15 am and toss the knife. He added that he wasn’t sure if it was Shawn that he saw, but whoever he saw looked a lot like Shawn.
They put Fin on the stand, but the defense tears him apart and now Melanie isn’t sure that she wants to testify anymore because she would feel horrible if he didn’t do it and she put him in jail a second time for something he didn’t do. She is called to the stand as a hostile witness anyways. After her testimony, the defense attorney approaches Barba and Benson and asks for a plea deal. Barba agrees to murder two, 15 years minimum and he tells the court what he did to Ashley. He tells them that he killed Ashley because she laughed at him when he told her that he had feelings for her and he was taught in prison that you don’t let anyone laugh at you.
