All the eliminated queens return in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2016 week 5. The queens will perform stand up and the eliminated contestants will have a chance to return to the competition. For a refresher on what happened last week, read my recap of episode 4.
RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2016 week 5 opens with the eliminated contestants walking in the room. Alyssa Edwards confronts Phi Phi O’Hara about everything she said about why Alyssa deserved to be eliminated.
Alyssa believes that Phi Phi was being two-faced while Phi Phi thinks that Alyssa is playing the victim. With the tension high between Alyssa and Phi Phi, Coco Montrese says, “It’s about to get real, real interesting.”
The next day, RuPaul Charles greets all nine contestants. She says they’ll be performing stand up in pairs. The top two returning queens will lip sync for the power to give one of the bottom queens the chop and will have a chance to return to the competition.
When Phi Phi and Coco work on their stand up routine, they suggest making fun of their own flaws. When Coco suggests that they could mention Phi Phi being two-faced, Phi Phi defensively says that Alyssa is the only one in the group who thinks that about her.
While Alaska and Alyssa work together, Alaska acknowledges the fact that she eliminated Alyssa. They quickly move on and Alyssa says that she has respect for Alaska and feels that the respect is mutual.
The pairs rehearse their routines for guest Chelsea Peretti. Chelsea gives gentle notes, like telling Tatianna, “Okay… that’s a joke.” Tatianna feels nervous because she doesn’t want her performance in Snatch Game to define her.
Alyssa and Phi Phi talk things out. They decide that their beef is squashed and hug. In her interview, Coco says, “That hug was like Obama hugging Donald Trump. Nu-uh. I ain’t buying it.”
The pairs perform for an audience full of previous Drag Race contestants. Since no one chose to partner with Roxxxy Andrews, she hosts the show. Her opening monologue is fumbling, but charmingly self-deprecating.
Phi Phi and Coco perform first. After their routine, Katya says in her interview, “Coco and Phi Phi are not so much doing a comedy routine as a live action, off-off-off-Broadway theater production of hookers at the point.”
Roxxxy returns in costume as Tossa Salad. She’s still a little awkward on stage. Alaska and Alyssa come on next. Alaska plays purposely stiff and stoic while Alyssa’s style juxtaposes off her.
Tatianna and Detox perform last and get a strong positive reaction for their set. Roxxxy ends the show by saying, “If you can’t laugh at yourself, how in the hell are you gonna laugh at somebody else?”
During critiques, Carson Kressley tells Roxxxy her entrance was strong, but some of the jokes didn’t land. Michelle Visage tells Coco and Phi Phi they had some funny jokes, but it turned into more of a character study than a comedy routine. Carson tells Alaska and Alyssa they worked together the best as a team. Michelle tells Ginger Minj and Katya she liked their relationship, but there wasn’t enough joy in their performance. Carson tells Tatianna and Detox they made his face hurt from smiling and laughing so much.
RuPaul decides Alyssa, Alaska, Tatianna and Detox are the top all stars of the week. Katya is safe. Roxxxy and Phi Phi are in the bottom two. Ginger and Coco didn’t get the chance to return. Alyssa and Tatianna will lip sync for the power to eliminate one of the bottom queens and to return to the competition.
Tatianna and Alyssa each pick a lip stick to represent the girl they’ll eliminate if they win the lip sync. Tatianna says it was a very close decision for her. Alyssa says, “I’ve weighed it all out and I know the decision I’m gonna make and I’m gonna stand by it.”
The song for the lip sync is “Shut Up & Drive” by Rihanna. RuPaul declares Tatianna the winner. Then she declares that Alyssa is also a winner. They’ll split the $10,000 tip to get $5,000 each and will both have the power to eliminate one of the bottom two.
Alyssa reveals that she chose Phi Phi to go home. Tatianna also chose Phi Phi, meaning that Roxxxy gets to stay. Phi Phi and Roxxxy share a hug before Phi Phi walks away. Phi Phi also hugs Tatianna, but brushes off Alyssa.
Phi Phi says that she understands Tatianna’s decision because she hasn’t been around, but thinks Alyssa is hypocritical to talk about “consistency” but then ignore how often Roxxxy has been in the bottom.
