Let’s start this Originals season 3 finale recap off on a good note: none of the Mikaelsons died (yes, we’re including Marcel with them). The bad news? They all suffered a terrible fate.
We have a lot of theories about what this twist may mean for the future of The Originals (which doesn’t return for almost a year!). So we’ll dive right into the Originals season finale recap.
Warning: The Originals season 3 spoilers ahead. Please do not continue if you do not want to know what happened on The Originals season 3 episode 22, “The Bloody Crown.”
The Mikaelsons quickly learn that Marcel is still alive. He confronts them with a large group of vampires from Klaus’s sireline. Kol tries to calm him down, and make him think about how Davina would react to his declaration of war. This sets Marcel off and he quickly bites Kol.
Elijah tries to save his brother and gets bit as well. Meanwhile, some vampire poisons Freya. When the wounded Mikaelsons, and Klaus, regroup, they realize that they need several different cures to save all of them, including a hexed Rebekah.
Rebekah steps in to try to talk some sense into Marcel. He promises not to hurt her, but he needs to make the rest of them pay. She convinces him to hold a trial for Klaus.
Meanwhile, Freya tries to survive and keep Kol from completely slipping over the edge. He begs her to put him to sleep, which sparks an idea.
Freya sends Klaus to undergo Marcel’s trial. Before leaving, Klaus leaves a note for Hope.
Rebekah remains by Klaus’s side the whole trial. Marcel condemns him for all the pain he caused his sireline. At first Rebekah tries to defend Klaus, but her hex makes her join the opposition. Klaus then decides that the best way to stay alive would be to make them hate him so much that they rather him live and suffer.
Klaus basically taunts them all and says that if he dies, he wins. Marcel decides to give him a fate worst than death. He pulls out papa tunde’s blade. Before giving Klaus a fate worst than death, he says the names of his fallen friends, including Davina, Diego, and Gia.
Rebekah calls Freya to let her know that Klaus survived. Hayley then stands around the Mikaelsons as Freya chants. They all fall asleep.
When they awake, Rebekah, Kol, Elijah and Freya are in some sort of dream state. Freya explains that their lives are now thethered to Klaus. As long as he remains alive, so shall they, but they still need three cures.
Hayley goes off with Hope to search for these cures. She places each Mikaelson in a coffin. Meanwhile, Marcel buries Klaus in a tomb.
Vincent visits Marcel to buy back the church. He wants to make it a sanctuary.
Earlier in the episode, we see Kinney attacked by a vampire at Marcel’s gym, which sparks Vincent’s quest to turn it back into a sanctuary. We do not see Kinney anymore in the episode, but we hear that he survived.
We predict that, when the show returns in January or March, it will experience a three year time jump. This will put it on the same page as The Vampire Diaries, and explain Klaus’s three year abscence. We might not see all the Mikaelsons back in action so fast.
Most likely the season opens with Hayley curing Freya, and then eventually Rebekah. Kol and Elijah will probably remain in limbo for a little while to maximize angst.
The show might even make it so there is only one cure, which means that Kol stays alive but remains in limbo…to return at another time. Until we hear news about Nathaniel Buzolic jumping from recurring character to series regular, we expect Kol’s fate on shaky grounds.
Rebekah might also stay in limbo, to justify Claire Holt‘s future abscence from the series.
Once the whole family wakes (maybe just Freya and Elijah), they find and wake Klaus. After spending three years in torture, he comes back even more destructive than before. This sidelines their revenge for Marcel (if they even want it, based on Elijah blaming himself), because Klaus becomes the beast again.
We also expect Klaus to be a little bitter that they got three years together while he suffered alone. Tis the way of Klaus, feeling abandoned and all.
That’s our predictions for the first half of The Originals season 4. What do you think will happen in the next chapter of The Originals? How annoyed are you that you have to wait nearly a year to see how everything plays out?
