Team Arrow grieves the loss of Laurel Lance on tonight’s episode of Arrow season 4. For a refresher on what happened last time when Damien Darhk murdered her, read my recap of episode 18.
This week’s episode of Arrow season 4 opened on a flashback to Tommy Merlyn‘s funeral. Laurel gives a eulogy and speaks about how much she loved Tommy.
In the present, a group of criminals are making an illegal gun exchange when a woman who appears to be the Black Canary uses the canary cry to incapacitate them and then steals the guns.
When Quentin Lance hears about the Black Canary, he tells Team Arrow that he thinks it’s Laurel. He points out this isn’t a big leap with everything they’ve seen happen.
Oliver Queen, Felicity Smoak, Thea Queen and John Diggle meet up at Arrow Headquarters. Oliver reminds them that Darhk is still out there and they need to get him.
Oliver tracks down the woman who’s posing as the Black Canary. She asks him, “Why did you abandon us? We needed your help and all you cared about were your friends.” She adds, “You left us at Reddington. You left us there to die. You failed this city.” She runs away from him.
Back at Arrow Headquarters, Oliver and the team put it together that this girl was on of H.I.V.E.’s prisoners. Oliver knows she was right about the team leaving those people to die.
Nyssa al Ghul visits Quentin. She’s surprised to learn that he assumed she would help him resurrect Laurel. She says that she’s very sorry but she can’t do that.
Felicity tells Oliver that she should’ve been with the team. She says that she can’t help but think that if she had been there, maybe Laurel would still be alive. Oliver tells her that he knows the reason he always blames himself is that at least it’s an answer.
Diggle finds Ruve Darhk and holds her at gunpoint. Oliver finds him and reminds him, “We can never become them.”
Later, the team watches a news report in which Ruve paints the Black Canary as a dangerous vigilante. She says that she’s put out arrest warrants for the city’s vigilantes.
Oliver says that they need to find the woman, who they know now is named Evelyn Sharp, before the Star City Police Department does.
Nyssa finds Oliver to tell him that Quentin is refusing to accept Laurel’s death and may take desperate action. After Oliver says he’ll be sure to watch out for that, Nyssa asks Oliver if he’s doing alright. Oliver tells her that the Black Canary legacy is being ruined by Ruve.
There’s a flashback to Oliver and Laurel spending time together a week after Tommy’s death. After they reminisce for a bit and look at old high school photos, Laurel says that they can save the world together. Oliver says, “Laurel Lance, always trying to save the world.” Oliver kisses her. She rests her head on Oliver’s shoulder and tells him, “I’m really excited about the future, Ollie.” This scene is sweet but it’s very hard to believe this actually happened a week after Tommy’s death.
Quentin is going to travel to find the League of Assassins. Oliver reminds him that they’re disbanded and that Nyssa has destroyed the Lazarus Pit. Quentin insists that there might be something. Oliver says that if there was any way to bring her back, he would do it, but there isn’t. Quentin cries and says that Laurel has always been there, when no one else was. He sobs so hard he has to lean over.
Diggle tells Felicity that if he hadn’t trusted Andy Diggle and if he’d listened to Oliver, then Laurel would still be alive. He says that he’s the one always telling Oliver to not have a blindspot for family. Felicity tells him, “Just like we tell Oliver: what happened was not your fault.” Felicity gets an alert on her computer about Evelyn’s location– she’s going to a gala being thrown by Ruve Darhk.
Thea, Diggle and Oliver search for Evelyn, trying to find her before she can get to Ruve or before Ruve’s security can get to her. Thea enters through the basement. Oliver is stopped by security, but he uses a dart to take the man out.
Evelyn uses her canary cry to hurt everyone working security at the event and shoots two security officers as well.
Evelyn finds Ruve and holds a gun to her. When Oliver arrives, he asks Evelyn what the real Black Canary would do and Evelyn chooses not to shoot Ruve. Ruve calls out for the police to arrest Oliver. Oliver uses his grappling hook to escape.
Back at Arrow Headquarters, Felicity says that there’s no sign of Evelyn. Thea says that as far as the world is concerned now, the Black Canary is a gun-wielding vigilante. Oliver says he’s not going to let that happen.
In another flashback, Laurel finds a note from Oliver telling her that he has to go away. As she reads it, we see Oliver flying to Lian Yu.
At Laurel’s funeral, Oliver gives a eulogy in which he reveals to everyone that Laurel was the Black Canary. He emphasizes that the Black Canary wasn’t a criminal, she was a hero.
After Laurel’s funeral, Barry Allen visits Oliver by Laurel’s grave. He asks if there’s anything he can do, but Oliver says he wants to be left alone. Barry speeds away. Oliver looks at Laurel’s gravestone. It not only has her name, but also says “The Black Canary.”
The end of the episode revisits the flashforward scene of Felicity and Oliver talking in the car after Laurel’s funeral. Felicity says that Oliver has to find a way to kill Darhk. Oliver says that it seems impossible. He says that Darhk’s power isn’t just magic, it’s darkness. Felicity says that she refuses to believe that Darhk is unstoppable. She tells him, “I fell in love with you for many reasons and one of those reasons is that you always find a way and you have to find a way now, for Laurel, for the city, for all of us.”
