Jenna Hamilton feels guilty over her article about Matty McKibben on tonight’s episode of Awkward season 5. For a refresher on what happened last week, read my recap of episode 18.
This week’s episode of Awkward season 5 opens with Jenna arriving at Idea Bin. She texts Matty and tells him that she’ll get her article about him taken down.
But, Lizzy announces that she’s so impressed with Jenna’s article that she’s giving Jenna an e-book. In voiceover, Jenna says that she knows she should say “take the article down.” Instead, she says, “This is amazing! Thank you!”
Luke congratulates Jenna, who tells him that she’s thinking of taking the article down. Luke tells her that Matty is selfish if he wants her to take it down.
Jenna realizes the article was edited so that her admission of her own faults in her break up were omitted and it just seemed like a rant against Matty. Luke is personally insulted by the fact that Jenna is so worried about hurting Matty’s feelings. Jenna says in voiceover that it looks like this article might ruin more than on relationship for her.
Jenna tries to confront Ethan about the changes to her article and ask him to take down the article, but Tamara Kaplan points out that this is a bad idea because the piece will get more attention if it disappears.
When Jenna talks to Ethan, he tells her to admit that the apologist paragraph was aimed solely at Matty because she didn’t want to hurt him. When she still wants to go to Lizzy, he tells her that there’s never been one summer where a fellow didn’t “disappear” and asks her if she wants to be the one.
Jenna talks to Lacey Hamilton at home. She tells her that her article was cruel. Jenna says that she was just trying to write something honest, but Lacey makes her realize how wrong it was to put the article out there for everyone to read.
Jenna tells Matty that she got the article taken down and asks him to read the unedited version. He tells her that he’s done talking about this and he’s done with her.
Jenna has Luke drop her off at Matty’s so she can try again to apologize. Luke gets upset over Jenna’s feelings for Matty and says that he’s not going to wait for her. When Matty won’t answer the door, she reads her apology chapter loudly from the other side of the door. She also slides the hard copy under the door.
She’s surprised to find that Luke came back, after being upset that she cared so much about Matty. Luke said that he realized he was a jerk for being hurt when Jenna cared about someone else. In the final scene, we see Matty decide to read the apology.
